Wary
Parish:
Parish woke up to the sounds of bikes revving up not too far away. Blinking, he sat up straighter on the couch, accidentally waking Tubman, who’d curled up against his leg and fallen asleep. The cat hissed indignantly and hopped off the couch, her tail high in the air.
Looking beside him, Parish realized that October wasn’t back yet. How long had it been since Spade had called her into his boss’ office? Parish started to get up, intending to look for her, but noticed a shadow on the wall in front of him that he immediately recognized. Turning around, he smiled at October. “Hey, you were gone a whi—” the rest of the sentence died on his lips when he noticed the intense look of sadness and worry on her face. He stood up, starting to move towards her. “What’s wrong? October, are you alright?”
“Parish,” she said, closing her eyes for a second and coming round to sit on the couch. He sat down with her, confused and worried. “We need to talk.”
For reasons he didn’t understand, he felt his heart sink to the bottom of his stomach as ice cold dread settled in his veins. This was not going to end well.
