Introduction
This is a short summary of my life leading up to this point. I was born on August 28th, 1910. My mother tells me it was the most painful experience of her life, as well as the most gainful. She told me I was the happiest and most playful of all babies she had ever had the pleasure of meeting. I don't remember my time as an infant or toddler much, but as a child, I do. I spent most of my childhood years playing with my friends, who I like to call the masks. The masks were people almost like me that grew up with me in size and intelligence. They wore masks that I could not identify, but I now know the the masks they wear are gas masks. The eyes of the masks had always glowed, but all of them had a distinctly different color. There were four of them, black, orange, yellow and red. At the time, they were my only friends. They were mischievous at most, convincing me to throw sticks and rocks at people while they walked down the streets. I got into trouble quite a bit because of the masks and the mischief they convinced me to do. My hometown, Gradden, was a beautiful place to me as a child, but not so much anymore. As I grew up, my mother got very sick, and her illness opened my eyes to the darkness in life. Her innocent and beautiful heart was slowing degenerating and dying. My energetic mother soon became more and more tired, until it came to point she became bedridden. She was dying slowly, but never let me know until it was too late. I remembered one thing from my childhood and as I grew up. My mother was an avid train lover. I do not know why I remember this, it was just one of those things you never forget.
Over time, the masks, whom I chose to start ignoring after people thought I was crazy mumbling to myself, grew more and more threatening and evil. Despite the fact they never directly caused any of the accidents, they somehow just influenced them. They would cause accidents with many people, resulting in injuries that were growing more and more fatal. They started to take over my life, as well as my sanity.
In 1925, I met a girl named Ana Babkin. She was beautiful, caring, loving, everything I would ever want in a girl, but there was also something that she was sad about, but I never asked her about it. We were inseparable, always together. However, in 1930, I married Ana Babkin. Our wedding was beautiful. For once in my life, I was truly happy with no feeling of fear. This made the masks angry for they no longer had my attention. They tried to hurt my Ana many times, but it always failed. So they fell back. They turned into my most trusted companions like they were many years prior. After a few years, they only showed up when something bad was about to happen. But, they did not even in anyway influence these events. Then it happened.
Chapter 1
It was October 30th, 1931. I took a look into the sky. It was early morning, even bright for an early morning. We stood around the beautiful birch wood coffin. Many put money in the coffin, for safe travels in the afterlife. I put her favorite flowers in the coffin, pink daisies. This reminded me of the vase full of pink daisies in our small kitchen. They always brightened the room, but not anymore. I cried while watching my mother be put into the ground. Ana stood next to me and held my arm tightly. I looked up and saw one of the masks standing across from me, staring at me. It knew she would die. But I wasn't going to try to be mad at it. Not in public, at least. Everyone paid their respects equally and left. I stayed a few short moments, and looked into the hole in which her body would lie for years upon years. I looked back at where Ana was standing and she looked back at me.
"Take as long as you need, my love," she said, "I'll wait for you at the car."
I simply nodded and looked back at the grave. I let a few tears fall on the coffin and then looked up. It was still standing there and staring at me.
"Why?" I asked it. I knew there would be no response, as they never gave any to me. For as long as I've known them, they've never said a single word to me. The most I've heard from them was a small grunt or a sound much like a sigh. They weren't that intelligent. This one simply walked up close to me and took a breath. It just disappeared in front of me. It knew, that fucker knew what happened and how. They fucking caused it. I knew they somehow had a part in my mother's illness that lead to her death. I knew it, but there was no way to prove it. I said my last good-bye to my mother and walked away to the where the car was, for the cemetery owner was coming to cover the coffin. I got into the driver's seat of the car and looked at my Ana.
