"Daniel Foster! If you don't get your butt down here right now, we are going to be late for school!" Imogene calls up to her best friend. "Not that I really care, but I'd rather not have Mrs. Jensen scolding us if we're late to geography." Imogene adds, checking the time.
Danny suddenly appears at the bottom of the stairs wearing faded, black jeans, a t-shirt, black chucks, and an old, worn, baggy jean jacket.
"Danny,"
"Yes Gene?" Danny says.
"Your emo is showing." Imogene chuckles.
"So is yours." Danny grinned hard, while glancing at Gene, who also happened to be in almost all black.
And with that they both grabbed their bags and playfully strutted out the door to walk to school.

"Hey!"
Danny turns his attention to behind them. He looks back and quickly realizes who it is. Before Imogene has the chance to redirect her attention behind them, Danny grabs her by the arm and starts to walk a bit faster.
"Dan-" Imogene starts, but Danny cuts her off.
"It's not worth it Gene," he slurs, starting to have a skip in his step, he is walking so fast.
"What? Are you scared?" The voices from behind taunt them.
Danny was about to start off in a sprint with Imogene in his firm grasp, when he is aggressively shoved from behind. Danny lets go of Imogene just in time for her to not go down with him.
He slides on the rough concrete onto his left side.
"Danny!" Imogene shouts as she turns around and connects what just happened.
The people attached to the taunting voices gather around Danny. Imogene attempts to get around the attackers, but is unable to.
Danny grunts and lifts himself a bit off the ground just long enough to belt, "Gene, go! Get out of here!" then lets himself fall to the ground once again.
"I'm-not-leaving-without-you!" Imogene struggles as she tries to push through the number of people surrounding him, who are plotting their next move.
The attackers finally break their close knit circle around Danny and back away from him. Imogene picks him up off the ground. He has a really bad scrape on the left side of his face from rubbing the concrete.
"What? Are you chicken? Come at us! You are nothing against us!"
Imogene begins to step up, but Danny stops her.
Imogene removes his hand from her arm, and lets her advance upon the small group of threateners.
"Oh yeah? Try. Me." Imogene says firmly.
Suddenly, Imogene is pushed backward aggressively. Danny is able to catch her before she falls to the ground. Imogene readjusts herself. A taller boy shoves her to the ground, out of his way, swaggers up to Danny from the small group and socks him square in the jaw.
Danny stumbles backward, then recollects himself and takes a deep breath.
Danny sharpens his stance and brings his fists up close to his face. He then swiftly connects his fist to the taller boy's nose in a solid right hook.
And in that same moment, Danny turned back to Imogene, swung his backpack over his shoulder, quickly helped her off the ground, grabbed her by the hand and ran as fast has he possibly could while dragging Imogene behind him.
"Hey! You guys get back here!" Danny and Imogene hear growing louder behind them.
Danny turns down an ally way with Imogene behind him still. They come to a fence at the end of the ally. Danny helps Imogene over, then swiftly hops it.
Danny turns down another ally way and hides behind a dumpster so they can catch their breath. They stay still for a moment. They hear nothing. They've finally lost em.
Danny and Imogene both give a heavy sigh of relief. They sat for a moment, then continued along the scenic route to school... meaning they had run in the opposite direction of the school, and now have to go the extremely long way. Danny reached to touch his cheek and winced at the pain. What a way to start the day.
How he did all of that in a blink of an eye, the both of them will never know. But all they are sure of was, that they were definitely late to first period, Mrs Jensen's geography class.
