She collapsed in one of the proffered chairs and let the guys tell the story to the policeman.

"Is this some kind of a joke? I mean, I appreciate you guys coming down here and visiting us but this is a bit much don't you think?" The Chief of Police said. His desk phone chose that moment to start ringing. Annoyed, he picked it up. He growled a curt 'yes' in the receiver and listened.

While the chief was busy on the phone, John leaned in and spoke softly in Annie's ear. "I just realized something. Our car belongs to someone who died in a violent fashion back in Los Angeles. I'm starting to worry a little bit. Maybe we should have used Peter's Buick after all. Here we are with a very conspicuous car. It's probably hitting the police databases right now and we're sitting in a police station telling a tall tale about alien parasites."

Annie's face drained of color as she realized John was right. She was then very interested in what the chief was saying on the phone.

"Yes they're here." After a pause, the chief barked. "How was I supposed to know that?" Another pause while his interlocutor talked. "Mm, mm. Yeah, I get all that sir, but put yourself in my shoes. This famous boy band and their little sister or something; arrive here telling me stories of alien parasites trying to take over Los Angeles. It's easy to be skeptical. Mm, mm. Yeah I get it. They'll be at your office shortly. Yes. Glad to have them out of my hair. What? Sure, sure. Don't worry sir, I won't lose them."

When the chief uttered that sentence, Annie's heart sank. 'We're doomed.' She thought in alarm.

"Well," said the chief, as he hung up the yellowed receiver. "Seems the mayor wants to see you."

"I can explain... What did you say?" Annie blurted out.

"The mayor wants to see you in his office." He repeated slowly, as if to a slow child.

"The... mayor?" Was all that Annie could say.

"Sorry mate," said Mathew, "but we need to find accommodations. A hotel room." He added, seeing the chief's blank stare.

"Maybe your little sister or... Who are you?" The chief asked Annie, probably noticing her for the first time.

"Annie Goldman, I'm their facilitator."

"Their what now?" The chief said bewildered.

"She gets our red M&Ms." Explained David.

"And mends our socks." Added John.

"And does the laundry." Said Peter.

"And keeps the fans at bay with her cricket stick. She's very efficient." Finished Mathew.

Annie wanted to choke the life out of them all. "Tsk. I help them with the little things like booking rooms at hotels and such." She explained to the puzzled policeman unused to British humor.

"Then, let her go to book your rooms. I'm sure the mayor specified to see you and not her, no insult intended ma'am." He added.

"None taken sir, and you are perfectly right, they should go see the mayor and I should take care of the rooms." Annie said annoyed.

"We'll see." Said John. Whenever he said that, that meant he intended to have his way, but wasn't willing to discuss it in front of strangers.

"Off you go now." Said the chief. "I have real work to do and it doesn't involve entertaining you good folks."

Clearly a dismissal. They stood up and went out the police station. The guys got in the Bentley and Peter lowered the driver's window. "We'll take care of the rooms, you go back in there and ask officer Bob to give you a lift to the mayor's office."

"But..." Annie protested feebly.

"No buts now, be a good girl and just go and see what that mayor wants. We'll be nearby, don't worry. You remember the Resort's name?" He asked Annie.

"It's Lake Nacimiento Resort on Resort drive. I remember." She said, defeated.

The window went back up, the engine started and the big car lumbered its way out of the police station's parking.

'Men', thought Annie fuming. She went back up the stairs and made her way back to Chief Malone's office again. He looked up from some papers on his desk to zero in on her face with an annoyed look.

"Yes?" He said, closing the folder.

"Ah, hum..." Annie hesitated.

"They dumped you?" He ventured.

"Boy, you're good." She said laughing.

"That's why I'm the head honcho here. Wait, I think I have an idea." He picked up his phone and composed a number from memory. "Janey? Is Bugsy there? What? I didn't quite catch that last one... What is wrong with those damned phone lines lately? Oh. When is she due? Great. I'm sending someone to you. Tell Bugsy to give her a lift to the mayor's office. I can't right now and the Mayor wants to see her. What? Above my pay grade honey. I don't ask why, I just say 'yes sir' and collect my pay check on Thursdays. Yep. huh-huh. Okay then. She'll be there in a few. Thanks Janey, say hi to Hank for me will ya? Right, bye." He hung up the receiver and pushed a button on his phone. Probably interoffice intercom. "Zoe? Is Sheffield gone?"

"No Chief, he's... Ahem... Checking his e-mails, if you know what I mean." Zoe answered cryptically.

"Again? I'm going to fix this. I'm coming." He got up and gestured for Annie to follow him outside of his cramped office. They walked over to where an officer was busy at his computer terminal. Annie looked over at the receptionist desk to see Zoe grinning from ear to ear. The young officer, Sheffield, seeing the Chief and Annie coming his way, closed the web browser in panic. The application closed, but not before giving them a glimpse of a pornographic web page displaying quite an array of feminine forms on it.

"Chief! What can I do you for?" Sheffield said in a teenager's breaking voice.

"Sheffield, Zoe and I know that you're a virgin living in his mother's basement, now Miss Goldman also knows it." Sheffield was about to protest. The Chief cut him off and continued. "If you want that sad fact about your person to remain a personal fact, I suggest that you limit your... researches, on your free time at home if you please." Chief Malone concluded, much to Officer Sheffield's discomfort at being publicly found out.

Annie tried not to smile, but it was really difficult. She put a valiant effort and barely managed it.

"I need you to take Miss Goldman to Bugsy's workplace. You can drop her there when you go to the Steward's place. It's on your way." At that, the Chief went to Zoe's desk and said something to her ear. She gave a short bark of laughter before controlling herself.

Sheffield's horrified face matched Annie's for entirely different reasons. They looked at each other. Annie face changed from horrified to resigned and Sheffield's moment of shame faded away to be replaced by a keen interest in Annie's figure.

'Bloody pervert' Annie thought, noticing that Sheffield avoided looking her in the eyes. Maybe he was shy.

"Alright Sweetheart, follow me. Looks like I'm going your way you lucky girl." He said to a bristling Annie. He didn't notice her shudder in revulsion.
