Maki did not sleep that night.

Every time he closed his eyes, even for a second, he would see the shadow of the creature haunt his lids. The storm didn't help either, it was as if the world was taunting him, making sure he did not see to his dreams.

He wasn't scared, no, he refused to be scared. It was just folklore anyway, no need to worry.

Knowing that the universe forbid him to sleep, Maki took to the window and peered out of it. He smiled, nothing was out there, he could se it now.

He almost felt like sleeping on the window sill, as if the thought of being near it would keep him on guard. He liked the idea and eventually drifted off, thinking that there was indeed nothing to be worried about.

Maki seemed to open his eyes after some time, suddenly feeling uncomfortable. He blinked his eyelids a few times, rubbing and scratching trying to help wake him up. The storm still rattled in the distance but it seemed farther away now. He was relieved to know that the storm would be gone by morning and with light he could cover the darkness that muddled his mind. Maki glanced at the window, the shear glass covered in a thin sheet of cool ice. He pressed his warm hand against the window, and the sheet cracked under the heat, making sight for him to peer outside.

His eyes were still a little blurry from his restful sleep but he could still make out the landmarks he had gotten used to seeing these past years.

Two small yellow orbs cloaked around a thick black cloak of darkness shined brilliantly in the stormy night. Maki hadn't even realized he had been staring at them until he saw them blink in confusion. Maki fell off the window sill, falling backwards on his butt. He shrieked for the life of him, cowering under the bed like he used to when he was a child.

After some time Maki came out from underneath the bed, peering around his room to make sure it was safe. He took to the window once more, being careful not to make any sudden movements.

He rubbed at the dew with his sleeve, peering out once more to make sure that he had indeed just imagined the figure. He didn't feel on edge either, it was as if all his nerves had finally seized and completely disappeared. He felt safe surprisingly, as if he could dream for days without a single nightmare interrupting his sleep. Maki almost drifted off into his peaceful sleep but of course as if to spite his good thoughts his full bladder wouldn't let him.

The only problem with having to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night was the fact that the only place to wazz was the outhouse, which of course was located outside. And it certainly wasn't the place he wished to go visit at the moment, especially with all this talk of a beast. Maki sat on the window sill and debated just waiting until morning, but he quickly shook that idea. His bladder wouldn't last that long.

Maki frowned, shifting on the cool sill, wondering if he should really go face his fears.

Maki shook his head and gathered up his courage, lantern and sauntered to the front of the house. He peeked outside into the cool night, squinting at the houses in front of him making sure he didn't see anything suspicious, before stepping outside completely. A swoosh of cold air boosted his thoughts, and he almost on a light jog lost his footing while trying to weave through the black blanket.

Maki's hand landed on the door of the wooden outhouse. He took care of business fairly quickly, wanting more than anything to be back inside his warm home. Maki picked up his lantern from where he left it beside him and exited the small space. Maki shut the door behind him and put the lock over it to keep out unwanted animals, before gathering his wits and heading back the short ways to his house.
