The sky trembled with thunder. The clouds were black, blacker than my heart. I stood there, looking at the towering gates, as another flash of lightning tore the sky in two. Beneath me, the clouds rolled and heaved, ready to drop their loads of rain. My wings curled behind me, snowy white in contrast to my surroundings.
Not for long.
I felt the presence of people behind me and turned, my hair whipping around me as I twisted sharply. The tears running down my cheeks stung, and my hands shook as I fell on my knees, my head bowed. A loud voice resonated around me, echoing in the air as it spelled out my doom.
“Soleil,” it said, “You have disobeyed me.”
“I’m…I’m sorry!” I couldn’t say anything else.
I had already suffered trial for my sins, and all the Heavenly Council of Justice had been present. I had been given the second worst punishment an angel can be given, other than the ultimate, final demise that our fallen brothers had suffered.
“Soleil,” the voice said again, “you know the rules. You will be stripped from your title, your angelic powers, and your identity. You will be born in a family of humans, where you will suffer the Sins of Humanity, and you will endure a life of struggles and hardships.
“One last thing:
“You cannot fall in love with a mortal.”
My brown hair fell in tangles in front of my eyes. My dress was ragged, and my once beautiful wings hung around me in tatters, slowly turning black. My hair too, seemed to turn to ashes before my eyes, and veins of darkness travelled up my arms. I looked up, and uttered a terrible, inhuman cry.
I exploded into a million stars, and as I lost consciousness, I thought I might have heard a sudden cacophony of wails, as if of mourning. But the noise was lost in the stillness that suddenly enveloped me.
Alone.
Falling in darkness that kept getting darker.
A presence only. No touch. No smell. No sound.
Just Darkness.
And suddenly, light.
And a distant, booming, noise…
A/N: In case you were wondering, the booming noise is the mother's heart. I'll lave the rest of the explanation for your imagination. Ahem...
