Entu rolled over in her nest as a loud "cock-a-dooodle-doo" rang out across the pond. Hahn the rooster and his wife Hähnchen lived across the pond. At 6:00 sharp every morning Hahn would shout this very loud awakening call to the whole pond. Although Hahn was annoying at times, he did make a good alarm clock. Entu looked over to the empty side of the nest where Ente slept. He had gotten up earlier to to go work in the purple carrot field. Entu slowly crawled out of bed and used her wings to pull apart the reeds that made of the walls of the room just enough so she could see out to the sun. "Hahn is right on time today...as usual" she said eyeing the position of the sun. She pulled back away from the wall letting the reeds fall back into their usual place. She waddled out of her room to go wake up Pato. Today was Pato's first day of school.
"Pato, aufwachen, wake up!" Entu said as the shook Pato awake from his slumber. Pato slowly woke up the suddenly turned to face his mother, his beady eyes piercing into hers. "It's too early" he said in a surprisingly low, grudgey voice. Entu smiled. "Pato, don't you remember? Today is your first day of school!" Pato's eyes immediately softened. "Oh yeah! I'll get ready!" He said in a higher, less grudgey voice. Entu pulled away from his nest allowing him to get up. Pato took off his sleeping bow tie and put on his new school bow tie he had laid out the night before. Entu smiled as she looked at her son. "My handsome little duckling!" She said. "Mutter(mother)!" Pato said annoyed. "Okay, okay!" Entu laughed as she backed out of his room. "I'll go get your breakfast ready."
As she stepped into the hallway to to go the kitchen, she eyed the door to the back room farther down the hall. She had something she needed to tell him. "I'll wait until he is home from school, I don't know if it will affect him and I don't want to ruin his first day," Entu thought to herself as she continued waddling down the hall.
"Bye Mutter!" Pato said stepping out the door. "Bye Pato! Get the teacher to call me if you need something, stay away from mean kids, be good, and so you have your lunch?" Entu asked frantically. "Yes Mutter, stop worrying, I'll be fine." Pato assured her annoyed.
"Tschüß Liebes, bye love!" Entu called out to Pato but he was already out the door on his way to school. Tears brimmed in her eyes. "He's growing up so quickly" she thought out loud. "It feels like he hatched only yesterday!" Entu quickly cleaned up the kitchen the waddles back down the hall to the back room.
"Look who's home!" Ente called opening the door for Pato to return home. Entu ran up to where Pato and Ente a were coming in and gave Pato a big hug. "How was the first day of school?" She asked him. "It was fine. I made a friend. His name is Kätzchen!" Pato told her excitedly. "That's great Pato, I'm so glad!" Entu said as she took his backpack and hung in on the wall. Entu looked up at Ente and he nodded his head. "We have something to show you Pato," Ente began. "Come back here." Entu said leading the way into the back room. They walked up to a small nest in the corner and Entu pulled back the curtain. "What's that?" Pato asked looking with curiosity at the alien like thing in the nest. "That's an egg Pato" Ente told him. "It's what baby ducks hatch out of. Your going to have a sibling!" explained Entu, a little nervous for his reaction. "How do you get an egg?" Pato asked them. "Well, when a mommy duck and a daddy duck love each other very much they.." Ente started. "...and let's continue this conversation another time" Entu interrupted as she shot Ente a look. Pato stared at them for a minute then shrugged his shoulders and walked out of the room. "I'm going to meet Kätzchen by the big tree!" Pato called as he slammed the door. "Be careful!" Entu called, but he was already gone. Ente and Entu looked at each other. "I guess that went well.." Ente said. "Yeah" Entu said "I hope he is as chill with it when the duckling comes."
