Benedict was startled awake by a pounding on his front door. He told his wife to go back to sleep, that he would get it. He stumbled to the door, wrapping his dressing gown around himself and grumbling about the late hour.
Amanda Abbington stood at the door, her face stained with tears and eyes filled with fear.
"Amanda? What's wrong Dear?" Ben's anxiety level spiked, Amanda never showed fear like this.
"Is Martin here?"
"No. I haven't seen him in a few days. Why would he be here?"
"I can't find him. It was his night to watch the kids and he never showed. God, Ben I'm so worried!" Ben pulled the small woman into his arms, doing his best to comfort her while his own chest was tightening with concern. Martin had mentioned that he and Amanda were going through some rough times, and that he was thinking about getting his own place here in Dartmouth. But he had no idea things were bad enough that they were splitting care of the kids.
"Isn't he answering his phone?"
"No. I've been calling constantly. Ben, what if he-"
"No. Don't even think that. I have a few ideas about where he might be. You go home, wait for him there. I'll call if I find him, alright?" Amanda nodded uncertainly, thanking Ben before turning and leaving. Ben raced back to his bedroom, apologizing to Sophie as he grabbed some clothes and his mobile. He called the ever-familiar number of his friend, silently praying that the man would answer.
"Hey, it's Martin. Leave a message."
"Damn it Martin! Answer your phone! Amanda's worried. I'm worried. Just- just call me, please."
Benedict fled from the house, climbing into his car and heading for one of Martin's favorite places in the city. His stomach was in knots as he sped through the near-empty streets.
"Hey, it's Martin. Leave a message."
"Damnit Martin! Please answer! Where are you?" Martin sneered as he listened to the hundredth message from Benedict.
Benedict Cumberbatch. The most perfect man in Britain. Everybody loved Ben, and for good reason. The man was incredibly talented, beautiful, and wonderful to talk to.
Martin wanted to hate him.
But how can you hate someone that is essentially a giant puppy?
His phone rang again. It was Ben, of course. He threw it against the wall, screaming as he did. He pulled at his hair, catching sight of the cursed papers sitting on the coffee table as he slid down the patterned wall. The alcohol he had been drinking was making the room spin and his stomach was rolling unpleasantly.
He would just close his eyes for a few minutes.
Ben was on the verge of panicking when a spark of realization struck him. He turned his car around and drove as fast as he dared towards the set of Baker Street. It was a long shot, but maybe Martin decided to go there, to practice lines for the upcoming series.
