"A lone wolf?" I asked with sure suprise. I think it was safe to say that it was the most ridiculous thing I heard, but I promised Nik I would hear him out.
"Yes," he replied and went into explaining, " a lone wolf is similar to a werewolf. The only difference is that lone wolves aren't bound by a pack. They can perform at peak with or without a pack." The information was a bit shocking. Okay, it was ballistically shocking. I guess that is what happens when everything you know is shattered.
"Okay," I affirmed," any particular powers or anything like that?" He looked thoughtful and replied.
"Well, we all have a common one. We go through the transition less painfully than werewolves. Their binding to 'pack' dilutes their individual power and so, they have to go through the painful, genetic contortions.Other than that, lone wolves can develop any random power. An alpha can end up with a multitude." He held sympathy in his eyes. Almost as if he knew what it was like.
"Nik?"I asked cautiously, passing a hand through his hair which he leaned into," Can a werewolf become a lone wolf?" If I could take my words back, I would have erased them from thought. The look of pain and hurt in Nik's eyes I saw, even though it wasn't directed at me, had me on the brink of tears myself.
"Yes," he sniffled,"Yes, they can. But, it is the most awful thing they could do to their pack. It requires withdrawing your power from everyone and it is excruciating to everyone." I put an arm on his back to comfort him as he continued.
"To answer your question, yes, I was in a pack. I was the alpha and a vampire coven managed to sneak under my nose, that alone is a enormous achievement. They held my pack hostage and the ransom was for me to become a lone wolf." He buried his head into my lap, convulsing as he sobbed.
"To this day, it was the most painful thing I ever endured. What was worse," he choked with another sob," what was worse was that they killed them, made me watch as my pack held looks of betrayal, pain, suffering and worst of all, disappointment." I let him get it out as he wrapped his arms around me,pulling me into a hug that I gladly returned. I don't know how I can explain it, but I feel.....whole, around him. It scares me a little, but part of me is just telling me to go along with it.
"Look," I tilted his face up to mine, focusing my honey eyes onto his stormclouds, " if they really were your pack, I'm sure they would have understood your situation. Their disappointment, there was no other option for you. I'm sure wherever they are now, they understand your position and know that they would have done the same." I stroked his hair as he closed his eyes at the feel.
"In the two months I have been here, you have been nothing but good to me. You treated me above and beyond the levels of host and guess and for that I will be forever grateful. If that isn't the sign of an alpha, then frankly, I don't give a damn what is." I patronized with full honesty. Remembering what I wanted, I asked.
"Now that I'm on track, what is it came after Ryan and Aisling and why?" he took a heavy breath and began.
"A vampire. They most likely saw my attachment to you and in extension, your friends. They have this overly proud, competitive nature, seeing us as abominations when we in fact were around before the thought of their conception was made." He had a look of tire," We try all we can to negotiate, but their pious leaders refuse to give any asylum and so they keep attacking us."
I fully understood where he came from, being so tired of fighting that you want to negotiate peace but the other side is so hellbent and arrogant that you have no choice but to fight. The amount of compassion and love this man held for whatever he valued and the absolute fearlessness of showing emotion, was so shellshocking it was almost unreal. Once again, I've fallen even further for him.
