Chapter 6

Night

Claire had just woke up from her nap. It was around 5:30 pm (yes Zoarr kept up with the time) and Zoarr said they would have supper around six. And what would they have for supper? Fish. But Claire loved the Zoarr's fish and would eat it anytime. Claire slowly got up and headed toward the entrance of the cave. She smelled the fish as she was heading down the hall. When she got to the entrance of the cave, she saw Zoarr cooking fish over the fire. When he saw her he told her to get two plates. She went over to the corner with the plates and grabbed two of them. She placed them near the fire and when the fish were done, Zoarr placed them on the two plates. They ate and talked until they were full. And then Zoarr said, "It is time for me to give you the gift. But first, let me tell you what holiday it is. Today is Exitmas Day."

"What is Exitmas Day?" Claire asked.

"Exitmas Day is when the wild and alone animals of the forest joined together to form clans such as the Bear Clan and the Big Cat Clan. We animals celebrate this day by trading gifts with one other, so I have decided to give you this gift," Zoarr said, pushing forward two gifts, both wraped in red wrapping paper.

"I am not a wild animal and I have nothing to give you, so why give me these gifts? I do not deserve them," Claire said.

"I know that you do not deserve them and that you are not a wild animal, but you do have something that you can give me," Zoarr said. Claire looked at Zoarr questionly, wondering what she could give him.

"You can give me your trust," Zoarr said to Claire, "and your friendship."

This really amazed Claire. Here was a wild bear asking her to be his friend. Wow, she thought. You never see that coming. But she remembered that love that she had felt earlier that day. And that is when she made a huge decision.

"I will be your friend if you are willing to be mine," she replied.

"I accept your friendship and trust," Zoarr said. "Now it is time for you to open your gifts."

Claire reached over to grab one of the gifts, but a question came to her mind.

"Why are you not in a clan?" Claire asked Zoarr.

Zoarr sighed. "I was kicked out because of something that I did.". And this story is how their friendship began.
