Chapter 26

It is Time

She continued to chew on her squirrel, but she could not keep the thought of the Gathering out of her mind. People were being chosen right now in Queen Elspeth's den by Elspeth, Jack, Faith, Shellfire, Quietice, and the fire elders. No, excuse me; not people but wolves. Claire began to wonder how long has she not seen another human being.

"Sigh," Brownclaw said. She looked into the fire that was in the middle of the camp. The fire was started by the fire elders, Shellfire, and Quietice. When they were done choosing wolves for the Gathering, the fire would go out. As she looked into the fire, she saw them talking about something, or someone. She began to feel herself inside the cave and could hear what they were talking about. The conversation she heard went something like this:

"She needs to go," Jack said. "She needs to be announced that she has become apart of the clan."

"But you know how she acted on that day we tried to kill Zoarr! She will be against it. She won't be able to go against him," Faith said.

"Faith is actually right," Quietice agreed. "She is just too clean to shed his blood."

"But every Gathering, new members are suppose to be introduced to the rest of the clans!" Shellfire said.

"But I don't think she will be able to see him killed," Faith said.

So that's what this is about, Brownclaw thought. They are debating if I should go since they are going to murder Zoarr, whom I tried to save!

"Does personal feelings of one count more than loyalty of this clan!" Shellfire growled.

"Loyalty to what?! Loyalty to becoming a murderer?!" Faith growled back.

"That's enough!" Queen Elspeth stepped in and growled. "Continue explaining Shellfire and answer Faith's question. But if I hear anymore hatred to each other, I will doubt your loyalty!".

Shellfire bowed and continued talking. "I mean being loyal to the clan by obeying the rules of each Gathering than not letting her go and announce herself as apart of this clan. If she wants to be apart of this clan, then she will have to let go of her personal feelings and participate in whatever we will do at the Gathering, and if that means killing that stupid bear, then it means she will participate in killing him!".

Brownclaw gulped and turned her face away from the fire. She wanted to throw up but she couldn't. She did her best to hold in her tears but one single tear escaped. She began to remember words from the conversation she and the snake had in the forest:

"I can help you," Brownclaw heard the snake's voice in her mind.

"I can change the way your friends treat you. I can change your future of being abandoned to becoming friends with everyone. But for me to do that, I need you to promise to do something for me," the snake's voice echoed in her head.

"When the time comes, I need you to obey everything I tell you."

What does he want me to do? Claire wondered. It was bad enough that she might have to be apart of killing Zoarr. I won't take part of his killing, Brownclaw thought to herself. I will not kill him no matter what happens.

No matter what happens.

Brownclaw looked up. Queen Elspeth walked out followed by Jack, Faith, Quietice, Shellfire, and the fire elders. Wolves began to get up and gather around them, so Brownclaw did the same.

"Here are the wolves who are coming to the Gathering (not including Queen Elspeth, Jack, Faith, Quietice, and Shellfire):

Ninja

One-Ear

Lore

Lucky

Maggie

Tremble

Quake,"

Queen Elspeth paused and took a deep breath.

"& Brownclaw."

Brownclaw.

This book is getting closer & closer to it's climax. Something is going to happen that you really won't expect. Anyways, sorry it took me a while to update. Again, I was playing my favorite game a lot, I had band, I had vacation at a theme park & water park, and now I have stupid homework from school. Sigh. Oh yeah! Band camp is next week. I'm rooming with someone I just met, so I hope I can make friends with her. I'm usually a friendly person, but I'm shy (can you believe that? lol). Anyways thanks for reading my book.
