Chapter 2.
As soon as I had decided where I would go, I began packing. It was past midnight anyway so my so-called mother would be asleep, meaning I didn’t have to worry about her finding me trying to escape.
I found out a tattered old suitcase from the bottom of my wardrobe and started throwing all of my belongings into it; clothes, shoes, underwear, make-up, pyjamas, hair straighteners, toothbrush, shampoo, conditioner, phone charger, earphones and books. Everything I had; what little of it there was. I managed to cram everything into my tiny case a fit a few other necessities into a small shoulder bag that I was going to take with me.
Pulling the suitcase from the creaking bed, I placed it on the floor, the wheels positioned so I could roll it from the room easily. I stopped as soon as I had started, the suitcase was ancient and the wheels squeaked and banged against the floor, just threatening to wake up my mother and stop me from leaving. Pausing for a second, I waited, my heart in my throat, hoping she would not wake.
After a few seconds of silence I relaxed, picking up the suitcase and hauling it along behind me, being careful to never once let it hit the floor. With all the effort I had, I managed to get to the back door. Quickly but quietly I searched the kitchen for any sign of money – something I would need to get away from this place.
I went through cupboards, drawers, boxes, containers, pots, jars, everything and anything that could have held money. I was about to give up until I saw a crack along the wall beside one of the cupboards. Digging my nails down into the crack I heard a loud click. Less than a millisecond later it gave way, swinging and opening a hole in the wall. Unprepared, I flew backwards into the kitchen table, knocking over a chair on my way. Cursing under my breath, I silently prayed that my mother wouldn’t wake up. I tip toed back to the hole in the wall, not waiting another second in case she had in fact woken up. I peered inside the hole, expecting to find maybe a couple of notes, enough to take me to where I needed to go.
When I reached inside and pulled out a thick bundle, secured by an elastic band, I almost shouted with glee. Almost. In my hand, I held a big wad of notes. I hurriedly calmed down and removed the rubber band holding the notes together. Separating them, I began counting them in my head. For every note that I counted my smile grew bigger. I could live off this money for months! To make things even better, there were two more bundles of money! In total there was over £1500. Stuffing all of the money into the side pocket of the suitcase, I grabbed my car keys from the side and unlocked the door. Suitcase in hand I walked out of the door for what I hoped would be the last time. It was pitch black outside, the road barely lit by the street lamps scattered up and down the roadside. All house lights were out and the street was dead. This was perfect! Nobody would be able to tell my ‘mother’ where I had gone. A clean get away, no witnesses to my disappearance. Ha! I sounded like a criminal!
Unlocking my battered old car, I threw my suitcase into the back seat, taking a twenty out of the side. I climber into the driver’s seat and tossed my other bag into the passenger seat beside me. Putting the keys into the ignition, I turned them. The car roared to life, the silent street making it sound that much louder. Taking one final deep breath, my foot hit the pedal. This was it. I was leaving and I would never look back.
