Chapter 3
To think I had actually done it. I had actually got up and just left. For good! You'd think that maybe I’d spend this time driving worrying about what's going to happen, about what will happen to my mother. But I wasn’t why should I? She didn't care about anything that happened to me, i could have died for all she cared! In fact,I doubt she would even bother looking for me. She would tell people some fake story abouthow I’d found my father and left her to live with him, leaving poor old mother on her own to fend for herself and how tragic her life would be without her beloved daughter.
All I thought to myself was how happyI was to be out of that hell hole. I had no idea where I was going to stay or whatI was going to do but I’m sure I’d find somewhere. And anywhere would be better than back home.
Once I’d gotten off the street, I had turned left onto the motorway, hoping to get to whereI want as fast asI possibly could. It was the dead of night andI was the only car on the road, it was silent except for the steady hum of the car's engine. Most people would find the silence eerie and quite disturbing, but no,I found it peaceful. Silence wasn't somethingI usually got; my day was usually filled with tears and abuse, both verbal and physical.
The night sky was filled with beautifully bright stars shinning a light path along the road, meaning my headlights didn’t need to be put on full. The silence and the stars seemed almost therapeutic, relaxing my tense body and making the journey away from my old life almost enjoyable. I let out a small sigh of content to myself, it’d had been years before I had felt like this.

I had been driving for almost two hours now and tiredness was starting to take effect on my driving, with no cars around at least I wasn't putting anyone in danger but I swear if I had carried on driving for much longer I wouldn't have made the whole drive there.
I spotted a small gas station at the side of the road that was completely deserted except for the old battered car sat outside and the old man at the counter, waiting for some sign of life to come inside. I pulled into the station for some gas since I was running low anyway. Once I’d filled the tank I walked inside, picking up some food and a couple of energy drinks to keep me going, I was almost there anyway, half an hour drive at the most
The man at the counter seemed nice enough; he looked as if he was in his late 60's, greying hair and you could see a couple of teeth missing when he smiled but he wasn’t like the usual sweaty old men who ran gas stations. He didn’t look to well off so I have him £50 and told him to keep the change. It would pay for a few meals for him; maybe he had a family too? Oh well it doesn’t matter if he has or not, I’ve done my good deed for the day (night?).
Getting back inside my car with the food I’d just purchased, I pulled out a chocolate bar and an energy drink, Galaxy and Monster. Best things ever, no argument necessary! I popped a piece of chocolate into my mouth and opened the can. Taking a drink, I pulled out my phone from my pocket and opened up my contact list, pulling out Elena’s number. Hopefully she wouldn’t mind me ringing at this time of night, it’s not like it isn’t important.
I pressed the call button and held the phone to my ear, waiting for it to connect. After a couple of seconds it started to ring. Each ring she didn’t pick up my hopes got crushed just a little lower. After 8 rings I was about to give up and just hang up and sleep in the car for the night.
“Ugh. Hello? Do you know what time it is?” Elena said as she answered the phone
“Yes, I do, it’s half past 4 in the morning but it’s really important”
“Important enough that it could wait another 4 hours?” She whined
“Yes, that important!”
She waited a few seconds before replying. “Well are you going to tell me what it is then or do I have to sit and wait?”
“Oh right, yeah. Well the thing is, I’ve kind of run away.”
“WHAT!” She shouted, fully awake and out of her sleepy haze now.
“And I’m about half an hour away from mystic falls.”
“And you decide to tell me this now! You couldn’t have told me before you’d set off!”
“Yeah…. Sorry about that.” I apologized
“Look, Aunt Jenna is still in bed but I’m sure if I can get her up, I’ll tell her what’s happened and you can come live here, we have a spare room so you should be okay. Plus she knows what goes on with you and you’re mother, which means she shouldn’t have a problem with you staying since you’ll be safe and all.”
“Thank you so much Elena! I love you right now! I’m setting back off now, so I’ll be there soon, I think I remember how to get to your house but I’ll ring you if I get lost!”
“Yeah, yeah, okay, love you too, but if you ever wake me up at this time again, remember, there’s a fine line between love and hate.” She grumbled, hanging up the phone, presumably to inform Jenna that I’m coming over.
I put my phone back into my jeans pocket and restarted the car's engine, a huge smile spread across my face asI pulled out of the gas station and made my way to Elena's house. Everything had worked out perfect because well, to be honest, I was relying on Elena and Jenna to let me stay otherwise I would have been living on the streets.
I crossed by Fell's Church and realisedI wasn't too far away from where Elena lived. It was starting to get light now, the sun was just showing over the horizon and you could here a few birds starting to wake up, it was only 5am though so it would be acouple ofhours until people started to get up. I was still the only car on the road.
All of a sudden, the birds all fell eerilysilent and they had all disappeared from sight, as if they were hiding from something. Thinking nothing of it I just carried on driving through the small street, the silence making me feel as if I was deaf.
Just seconds later, a man dressed from head to toe in black appeared just metres away from the front of my car. I instantly put the break on, trying my best to stop before I hit him. A blood curdling scream escaped my throat as the car wouldn't stop in time. It was too late...
