Y/N sighed as she stood behind the counter at the cafe she worked at. She looked to the door as it dingled, meaning someone had just entered. "Welcome to Oliver's." She chimed happily with a smile and a fake English accent. Her smile disappeared for a second as she adjusted her posture, her baby doll shoes being slightly uncomfortable. Especially to be standing in most of the day. But her job was a good paying one, and if that was a small price to pay, she was willing to bear it. Her uniforms for this job were... Rather different, but she didn't mind. They were custom made dresses, a light neon pink and electric baby blue being the main colours. At first, she thought it was very odd that only one man ran the shop, and even odder that the man only wanted one helper. He was a cheery, bright English man who always wore a smile. He was always very polite, and would constantly make extra sweets for Y/N to take home. And she never refused!! His concoctions in the kitchen were absolutely addictive..
"I'd like two dozen chocolate frenzy cupcakes, please." A lady in a red pants suit said quickly, pulling out her wallet.
"Yes m'am.. Would you like to customize them for only two dollars more?"
"Uhm.. Sure. Can you maybe do the multicoloured sprinkles as well as the chocolate ones?"
"Of course. That's going to come to only $20.67."
The woman pulls out her money and pays, nodding as Y/N tells her that it'll take about 45 minutes for her order to be ready.
As the door to the shop opened once more, Y/N called over her shoulder, "Welcome to Oliver's!" She grabbed a magnet off a near by board and stuck the order there. "Two dozen coco frenzy!" She called out to her boss. As she turned back around, she could see a man standing at the counter. He wore a beanie, green hair sticking out from under it. His skin was pale and he had a nice bit of scruff on his face. He noticed her looking in his direction and he gave a small wave to her.
He's gorgeous.. She thought. When she got back up to her spot, she gazed into his bright blue eyes that lay behind a pair of black glasses. But, there was an unreadable look to them.. Like there was a weight on his shoulders..
"What can I get you?"
He held up a finger as he reached into the bag slung over his chest. He lifted a small whiteboard out of it and around his wrist, tied to a bracelet, was a marker. He uncapped it and began to scribble on the board. After a moment, he held it up for her to read.
Hi. Can I have a large coffee with sugar and cream? Also some cookies, please.
Y/N nodded and began to punch things into the register. "What kind of cookies would you like?" She asked him. He looked down into the glass case.
Y/N watched with a smile as he began to survey all the cookies in the case, looking like he wanted every one of them. He pointed to three kinds. Y/N nodded. "Chocolate chip, double fudge and frosted sugar." She looked up for confirmation, and the man gave a thumbs up. "That'll only be &
$10.21."
The man reached into his pocket after putting his board down, fishing out his wallet and pulling out the money, though keeping his eyes fixated on Y/N as he extended the cash towards her.
"That's for here, right?" She asked, grabbing the money.
He nodded and accepted the change when she handed it back.
"What's your name, sir?"
Picking it back up, he scribbled on the board again.
Jack it read.
Y/N nodded and wrote on the receipt. She watched as Jack shuffled away to a table. While she had some time, she hurried to fix his coffee, putting the sugar and cream in. She poured it in, watching as it formed a small heart for a second. Her cheeks flushed with colour, but she quickly shook it off and turned around, placing his coffee on the counter. She took a key from her apron pocket and unlocked the glass case that held all the sugary confections from heaven. She grabbed the cookies that he'd requested. She chose some paper to wrap them in, and decided on a light green with black dots since it matched his hair. She placed everything on a small platter and walked from behind the counter, going over to the table he sat at. He was absolutely captivated by something in the distance, staring off into time and space itself, not noticing her approaching. Not until she placed his coffee down, did he look up, making a small noise of surprise. He quickly picked up his marker, writing on the board that lay on the table. Y/N turned her head to see it.
Sorry, I wasn't paying attention.. Thank you, though
"No problem! I'm glad to be of service." She noted with a smile, placing his cookies down as well. She held the platter flat against her body. "Anything else?" She asked.
He shook his head, grabbing his coffee cup solemnly.
She nodded and walked away again, going back behind her counter.
She pulled her phone out from her apron pocket to check the time. It was just hitting three o'clock, right around the time where business slowed down a little. This was usually the time where Y/N took her break, so she decided to go ahead and tell Oliver. She left the counter to go into the back kitchen.
"Ollie? Are you back here?" She asked aloud.
"Yes, poppet!" He responded, closing an oven door. "What can I do you for?" He asked, wiping off his hands on a towel that rested on his shoulder.
"I just wanted to tell you that I was about to go on my break. I don't want you to think I just left the counter unattended."
"Aw. Poppet, don't fret. I'll be out in a second to take over. You go and enjoy your break. Take anything you'd like from the case." The strawberry blond mused with a smile.
"Thanks, Ollie." Y/N smiled widely as she went back to the front, grabbing her lunch bag. She held it as she peered down into the glass display case. She picked out two adorable looking tarts, then made herself a cup of iced coffee.
Usually she sat alone on her breaks, but today, she thought she'd try and make a friend. She went over to the table that Jack was still sitting at.
She looked down at him, gently tapping his shoulder.
He looked up from his phone with a start, eyes wide.
"I'm sorry! I-I didn't mean to scare you! I was just going to ask if I could sit with you.
Jack's eyebrows furrowed a little before he finally nodded, gesturing to the seat across from him.
"Thank you." Y/N smiled as she sat down, placing her things on the table. "Was everything to your liking?" She asked, gesturing to his coffee cup and the cookie in his left hand.
Jack tilted his head a little, confused. He set his stuff down and wrote on his whiteboard. Can you repeat that? It said.
"Oh. I'm sorry.. I asked if everything was okay. The coffee and stuff." Y/N repeated.
This time, she noticed Jack staring at her lips as she spoke. His face seemed to light up a little once she finished. Compared to the tired, worn out look he'd been sporting since he walked in, it was like God had shone a spotlight on him.
He quickly erased his previous writing, scribbling again.
Oh yeah! The cookies are really good! And you made the coffee perfectly. Thank you.
Y/N nodded. "That's good.." She began to open her lunch bag, taking out the sandwich she packed this morning. As she unwrapped it, she couldn't help but to wonder why Jack stared at her lips like that.. And why did he use that whiteboard to speak? Did he have laryngitis or something..?
"Um... Do you mind if I ask a question..?" She asked Jack, who was staring off into space again, but this time, in her general direction.
He nodded, coming back down to earth.
"Why do you use that whiteboard thing?" Came her question as she bit into her sandwich.
Jack's expression seemed to turn sad as he reached for the board again.
"If it's too personal, you don't have to tell me," She quickly stated.
Jack went on with scribbling. After a painful couple of seconds, he held it up.
Promise me you won't treat me any different. Promise me you'll see me as a regular person.
Y/N frowned a little. "Of course.. Why wouldn't I?" She said softly, gazing into Jack's eyes.
Jack studied her face after she spoke and finally decided to write once more. When he held up the board after a minute, Y/N softly read aloud.
I'm deaf. I use the whiteboard to communicate with people who may not know sign language.
Y/N nodded after she finished reading.
"Wow. I guess I know why you mad me promise to not treat you different. A lot of people must totally breeze over the fact that you're still a person."
Jack nodded a little, slowly erasing what he'd wrote. Silence befell the two for quite a while. Jack finished off his cookies and Y/N finished her sandwich and tarts. She clutched her coffee cup in her hands and stared at the ice chips floating around candidly in her beverage. She looked up, trying to think of ways to lighten the mood. She waited until she and Jack made eye contact.
"Hey. Why don't you try and say something to me in sign language. I took a class back when I was in college. Maybe I still remember some things."
Jack's eyes lit up and he smiled a little. Y/N's heart melted at the sight.. He nodded and sat up straight. Pushing up his glasses, he began to make gestures with his hands and gazed hopefully at Y/N when he was finished.
Y/N smiled widely. "I didn't understand any of that." She laughed.
Jack's smile matched hers as he let out a small chuckle. He grabbed the whiteboard, beginning to write.
I said that this cafe has good cookies.
"Ohh!" Y/N laughed again. "Try me again."
Jack nodded, setting the board back down. He made some more gestures, looking at Y/N with an unreadable look.
Y/N narrowed her eyes at the man, trying to draw something from memory. "You signed something about hair... Right..?"
Jack looked surprised. He actually did. He'd actually signed: 'Your hair is so beautiful.'
He grabbed the board, scribbling: I said that your hair looked nice...
Y/N's cheeks flared. "Oh.. Thanks, Jack.. Your hair looks nice, too. Green suits you."
Jack smiled widely. He quickly scribbled on the board. This ol patch of grass on the top of my head? I need to get it redone. After Y/N read it, he removed his beanie, freeing his hair from its confines. He swiped some of the hair from his eyes, gazing up at Y/N as he did so.
Y/N could feel her cheeks heat up and she looked away shyly.
The two talked and talked, but soon, Y/N's break was over. The customer traffic began to pick back up again, and she was needed in the front of the store once more. But, she didn't want to leave.. Jack had somewhat came out of the little shell he seemed to be in.. And Y/N wanted to get to know him more!! But alas, she was still at work, and was only halfway through her shift. Reluctantly, she finished off the rest of her coffee, getting ready to stand. She looked to Jack and smiled a little. "It was so nice talking to you, but my break's over now.. I've gotta get back to work."
Jack frowned a little at he grabbed the whiteboard again.
Aw. :( okay. I guess I'll go, but give me your phone first.
Y/N nodded, pulling her phone from her apron pocket and handing it to him. He tapped a couple times and soon handed it back.
Y/N gazed down at her device. She saw his contact page, his name being 'Jackaboy💚'. She giggled. "Nice. Here, lemme take a picture." She pressed the circle for the contact photo, pointing the camera towards her newfound friend.
Jack smiled, sticking his tongue out as he held up two fingers.
"Aww. Cute.." Y/N muttered as she took the picture.
When she looked back up from her phone, Jack held up the whiteboard.
Text me later, maybe?
Y/N nodded. "Definitely." She said before standing. She gave a small, sheepish wave. "Bye.." She had almost even said, I'll miss you, but she quickly caught herself and thought better of it. As she walked away, Jack stared longingly in her direction. As she got back to work, Jack gathered his things.
When Y/N looked up from helping a customer, Jack was no longer sitting in his spot. When she went to go tend to the table, there was at least eight dollars on it, and under the money was a small piece of paper.
'You deserve this. Thanks for making me feel normal again. <3'A/N
There may or may not be another part to this in the future. I had this idea one day and I was going to die if I didn't hurry up and write it. I hope you enjoyed.
