"hey Jack, come on, we gotta go, your surprise is waiting."
"ya, ya Molly hold your horses I'm coming," Molly is always yelling at me and rushing me out the door no matter what time it is. Damn she's pushy.
"Jack! Hurry your ass up"
"okay, okay" I rush down the stairs, almost falling on my face. "Molly can ya tell me now? I wanna know where you're taking me this weekend" she walks over to me and pats my head "Now, now brother patients is key" She gives me a wink.
We walk out the front door, and into the car. We pull out, and she turns on the radio to her awful excuse for music, although some songs aren't too bad. She turns it up and sings tone deaf like normal. I love her she's my sister after all but she is something else, while she was being loud I starred out the window, watching the trees go by, I know them all well. I live in a small town in Michigan that no one really knows, it's called Redwood. We go down the most familiar road I know, the road where my best friend, Katie , lives. Her house is the third one on the left. Of course we pull in her drive way, and Molly turns down that demented music as I open my door.
"Kat" I yell as I run to hug her, "Do you know where we are going, Molly won't tell me," I asked hoping for an answer.
"Come on Jack it's a surprise for your seventeenth birthday." She smiled, she has the sweetest smile.
She pushed me playfully, as we jumped in the car, I sat in the back with Kate, although I still just watched the trees go by out the car window. I always seem to get lost in my own thoughts, I don't know, its just so easy just to stare and get lost in everything. I watched tree after tree. I swear I saw a big black blob between trees, but I just decided to shrug it off.
"Jack aren't you listening to me?" Kate Shook my shoulder, and I snapped out of my hypnotic state.
"Sorry Kat, I was lost in my thoughts again," I felt bad for doing that to her all the time, "go ahead I'm listening." she was going on about something that happened at school with some girl named Jessica Love, it's all a bunch of bs to me, this Jessica just likes drama.
Molly stopped the car and Kat's face brightened with excitement, and she dragged me out of the car before Molly even opened her door. I looked around and we were in some woods, that has a cabin by a huge lake. I breathed in deeply through my nose to take in the fresh air of the woods, I smelled the lake and the pine trees, as I smiled.
Molly punched my shoulder, it hurt a little, "so ya like it little bro" she smiled "We're gonna be here all week. Happy birthday little brother."
Kat hugged me and we went inside, Everything reminded me of mom, she loved the out doors, this cabin was hers. I remember going here during the summer, before her accident. I walked in to the living room, it was small with only one small couch, two chairs, and a small fur rug laid on the floor under a coffee-table. I felt my eyes burn, and my throat started hurting. I fight back tears, I missed my mom, but Kat was here, and I didn't want her to see me cry. I rubbed my eyes to keep the tears from rushing down my face and continued on through the old cabin. It only had two bedrooms, one was mine and Molly's it had two beds and two dresser's, the beds were only twins, but the dresses were kinda big so we did spend all summer here. The other bed room was my mom's, I didn't dare go in there. The bathroom was at the end of the hall, it was very small.
I walked back out to the living rook and Molly was bring in her bags from the car, "It may be your birthday but at least bring your damn bags from the car." she snapped at me, I rolled my eyes and walked out to the car, Kat was there pulling her suitcase out of the trunk, mine was under her's. I helped her get it out, it felt like a ton of bricks. why do girls pack so much, I don't understand. I grabbed my bag and throw it on the couch inside. I walked around back to see the lake, I heard the waves crashing on the beach shore.
I walked up on the deck, sat down and put my feet in the water, it was cold at first but I got used to it, after a few minutes. Kat came and sat next to me, she put her head on my shoulder, then stared giggling as I head foot steps running down the dock and before I could look up I got pushed in to the lake. I got up above the water and Molly was laughing her ass off before Kat pushed her in. I smiled and pulled myself back on the dock and stood next to Kat. we both jumped in together, all of us had fun in the lake until sun set.
When the sun set, Molly and I got a fire started and we all sat around the warmth, I looked up at the stars and started thinking about what it's like to die. Is it peaceful? Is it painful? Is there life after death, a haven, a hell? What would that be like, where would I go, haven? Hell?
Molly and Kat were laughing over some stupid I did when I was younger I don't really care I've known Kat since I was five or so. That's when we heard this howling sound, it didn't sound human, it sounded like a demon wolf, or so I thought. my heart was pounding it came from a crossed the lake but Molly wanted us to go inside so we did. As we walked back inside we hear this awful wining sounded, like wolves, dying. that sound hunted me all night long.
