He gives me the biggest hug anyone has ever given me.

"I thought you were dead" he whispers into my ear, still hugging me tight.

I was alive, and kind of doing fine, except the fact that there were corpses everywhere. Just his presence was enough for me. I felt happiness. I felt love. Those emotions I thought I'd never feel ever again.

After 5 straight minutes of hugging and crying he releases. His warmth left my body. He looks me straight in the eyes.

"We're ok. We're ok." He reassures me.

"We're ok." I say back nodding. "So what do we do now?"

"Let's get some backpacks, fill them with food."

His husky voice just made me feel safe. I actually have hope in this hell of a world now. I might survive. I might survive with my best friend, but I'm worried shitless at the same time.

"That's a good start. But we need to think of a long term option. And we need to live somewhere. We need water that lasts for the futu-" He cut me off.

"Don't worry about that. We'll figure it out. Don't stress, it's not a good idea." Grayson was right. I shouldn't worry.

I never thought a quick walk to the grocery store would be this awful. Stepping over lifeless humans, seeing the blood from the people who got ran over by crashed cars. Maybe those people weren't even sick. Maybe they could have joined me and Grayson, but they got ran over by sick people.

The smell too. Oh, the smell. I was nauseated the whole way. When we got inside the store it smelled surprisingly fresh. No corpses to be seen. No corpses to be smelled. Just fresh fruits and veggies. I think the store closed before it hit. The virus. The virus that took over their lives. I start to feel this sadness again. A tear rolls down my cheek.
I miss my family.
