*Engagement Ceremony*

--------------------------------------

-Maryam-

"Are you ready?" Mom asked me as she enter into my room. I looked up and saw her in a lavender color dress. I sigh and look down at my hands.

"Do I have another choice?" I asked quietly enough for her to hear it. Whatever they are doing is wrong and they know it, but they didn’t even try to stop it.

"No. Whatever we are doing is for you." Was all she says before walking toward me and make me stand up beside her. We walk out of my room to downstairs where Dad invite some of our close friends and family.

I looked up as we enter in the living room and saw Dad standing a few steps away from me. His eyes held pride. Mom was wrong. Whatever they are being all for themselves, not for me. If they really want to do something for me then they should stop all this but I know they won't. I looked at Mom when she grabbed my shoulder and motion me to follow her steps toward the couch where I have to sit beside Saim to complete this engagement ceremony.

Once I seated, I looked around before looking down when I saw none of my two friends here for me. I don’t blame them because Waniya didn’t live here and Misha was in the hospital because her blood pressure gets down, which caused her to faint on the middle of the staircase but thankfully she didn’t hurt herself as her mother-in-law was there for her.

I looked at Dad when he announces that it is the time to exchange rings. I looked as Saim Mom step forward and sit beside me before opening the box she had. She pulled out a beautiful ring with a big diamond on it. I looked at her and force a smile when I see how much happyl she is. She makes me wear it and then kissed my forehead before holding a small spoon of sweets to my mouth. I carefully eat it and return her hug before sitting straight.
Mom and Dad do the same with Saim and step back to let everyone come forward and congratulate us. It was hard for me not to cry and smile when everyone give us their wishes.

My cousin Simra who used to be close to me before coming here give me a frown before point her eyes at Saim. I lightly shake my head and look down when I saw the shocked look on her face, but I know she wouldn’t let it go and asked me about it tonight as she was staying here for a week.

After the ceremony was finished, almost everyone leave for their homes expect our family members who come to attend the function from another city. When I was free to go back in my room, I walk away as fast I could to get out of the dress that Dad choose for me. It was heavy and Dad knew I hate these type of dresses, but still he makes sure that I wore that dress.

"Come in." I put the dress in my closest and walk out to go back in my room. I saw Simra sitting on the bed with her few months old baby girl sleeping in her arms. "Lay her on the bed."

"How are you doing?" She asked once I seated on my bed beside her daughter. I shrugged, looking at her.

"Fine. How everyone is doing back at home?" I asked, thinking about her parents who is my favorite Aunty and Uncle from my Dad's side. She smiles slightly and shrugged.

"Everyone is fine there. Mom was actually thinking that you should visit us for a few weeks." She looked at me questioningly but I just shrugged and look down.

"I don’t know if Dad would allow me to leave since I just got engaged and you know how much Dad is protective for me." I tried to make an excuse because I don’t want to go there and say something that I shouldn’t because I know my Aunty wouldn't buy any of my lies. She knows me more than anyone and can tell when I am lying.

"That is the reason I am here. Mom asked me convince your Mom, Dad to let you come with us, but first I had to ask you." I sigh in defeat and nodded slightly.

"I will think about it." She nodded and we talk about things happen in her life, but interrupted by a knock on my room door. I called for the person to come in and after few seconds Saim enter in the room. He looked at me then at Simra before sighing and looking back at me.

"I want to talk about something. In private." He sat and took a glance of Simra. She nodded in understanding before she stood up to leave with her daughter. As the door shut behind her, Saim started to pace in my room. He was mumbling something, but I couldn’t make it out what he was saying.

"I can't do this." He finally stops and look at me. I was confused for a few minutes before understand what he is saying. I nodded with a small smile and listen as he explain me everything.

I prayed for everything to go, what he plans. If this works that I will be thankful for him all my life.
