there were three other people leaving the castle behind yoongi. taehyung was closest to him, trailing at his feet like a puppy and asking many questions. jimin and seokjin were hanging back slightly, the blue- haired boy watching the red boy with a delicate glint in his eye. a silence was engulfing them, all of the birds seemed to have concealed themselves in their nests and the entire population of the village had miraculously disappeared. it made yoongi slightly uneasy, he wished they would at least run into one person who could tell them anything about what had happened. one thing he did not like was going out on a whim, but sometimes it was necessary, like today. his mother's life was more important than dealing with his dislikes.
"how long do you think we'll be, hyung?" taehyung continued to bug yoongi, at least it looked like he was bugging yoongi, but personally yoongi didn't mind that much. all yoongi did was knock his shoulder against taehyung's with a small amount of struggling and then shrugged. he tried his best to give the younger a tender response, sending him a calm look.
"i'm not too sure, taehyung-ah. for some reason, my powers aren't working brilliantly at the minute." yoongi shrugged his backpack up his shoulders, rubbing his hands over his face. "i'm quite scared about it, actually. this only happens when there's a catastrophe happen to you."
"has there been a catastrophe happen to you?" seokjin cut in from behind the pair, and they both spun around to face the trailing knights. yoongi caught onto a glare he received from jimin and sent him a knowing smirk in return.
"i don't know!" yoongi snapped, sending a confused look seokjin's way. "i don't exactly want to think about any catastrophes happening to me right now, especially when i'm going to check that my mother is alive!"
"ok, ok... i shouldn't have asked. can we just keep going please?" seokjin pushed his company forwards, causing taehyung to bump into yoongi's back. the two fell into a fit of giggles and proceeded forward, leaving seokjin and jimin to trail behind again.
"does your mother have the same power as you?" taehyung continued to ask questions, pulling on yoongi's forearm when he didn't get a reply.
"she does. i got it from her, i think." yoongi flinched when a bird flew out of a tree, having once been camouflaged by its new leaves. not only was there leaves, but blossom was beginning to sprout on the trees, leaving them painted in pink dollops. he couldn't help but stop, watching as a blackbird hobbled across one of the many branches and absentmindedly pecked at some blossom, pulling it off and dropping it onto the ground near yoongi's feet. it sparked curiosity in the other and he moved towards the blossom, picking it up and holding it between his fingers. when he looked up, the bird was gone.
"is it just me or did that bird just give you that blossom?" jimin cut in after the four broke from their shocked silence, "and then leave?"
"it did, jiminie." taehyung muttered, watching the flower with a pout on his face. "i can't touch flowers. they burn. i wish i could, blossoms are pretty."
jimin then proceeded to walk towards the tree, launching himself off the ground to snag some blossom. he yanked it from the tree then ushered taehyung over to him, resting his hand out. "here, i have an idea. give me your hand."
"wh-what?" taehyung spluttered, being oblivious to yoongi backing up to stand next to seokjin, crossing his arms over his chest and cradling his own blossom in his hand.
"just do it." jimin gripped his hand and passed him the blossom, biting down roughly on his lip. normally, the blossom would burn under taehyung's fire powers. now that jimin's hand was circling in water and wrapping itself around taehyung's hand, it seemed to be cancelling it out.
"they're good together." yoongi commented, watching as taehyung enthused about being able to finally hold a flower without killing it to jimin, thanking him over and over and wrapping his arms around his neck, hugging him tightly.
"you're right. they always have been." seokjin replied. "i'm sorry about mentioning the catastrophe thing. i probably shouldn't have."
"it's fine, you were just talking." yoongi swung his backpack around so he could access it, unzipping it with his free hand and pulling out two water bottles, handing one to seokjin and taking one for himself, zipping it back up and throwing it back to its original place. "kids, we need to go!"
"we aren't kids!" both interjected, receiving a hard look from jimin and a pout from taehyung. all yoongi did was usher them to follow with a wave of his hand, taehyung bundling over next to yoongi and jimin, for the third time, falling back with the oldest.
again, a blackbird flew over their heads.
ㅡ
"blackbirds seem to like you, hyung." jimin commented while the four were entering the village, observing as the bird dropped onto yoongi's shoulder and quite happily perched itself there.
"maybe a bit too much." yoongi whispered, turning his head to look at the bird. it did not flinch, but it rotated its head to look back at yoongi. "look, we're here."
he raised his arm to point at the village, as both an indicator and a test for the bird, yet it still did not budge. it was making yoongi curious; why was this bird refusing to leave him alone? with a small nudge from jimin's shoulder and a playful flick on the ear from seokjin, his pace picked up into a run as he sprinted towards the village. his blood ran cold through his veins when he saw red plastered across walls and trees, buildings turned upside down in search for something and small fires still alight.
he sunk to his knees when he saw his old home, burned to the ground. he picked himself straight back up when he heard a strangled "hyung..." emerge from the rubble.
