In Which Gary Is Very Small

Dot, JPG and Rookie were all relatively fast runners in the deep snow. JPG could just fly if he wanted to. Gary, however, stood at half their height, tiny feet hardly being able to outrun anything, and in deep snow he had to stay inside so he wouldn't be waist deep...

"Pesky penguins..." Herbert stomped his foot and ran after the escaping penguins who'd just foiled another set of his plans...

"A-agents! Please wait up for me!" Gary yelled, waving his flippers at the his coworkers. He was knee deep in the snow and struggling to run, when he felt a claw pierce the back of his lab coat, the sharp tip touching his neck and slowly lifting him from the snow.

Gary thrashed in the air, calling for help as Herbert gripped him tight. It wasn't fair he was tiny!

Rookie looked back for a second, lifting his glasses and gaping. "JPG! Dot-- you forgot about--"

Herbert proceeded to bitterly laugh at them, casually putting the terrified squirming penguin between his jaws and sprinting away on all fours.

Gary had many questions.

He was in a dark cave, lit by a few lanterns, in a pet cage on an old table. He could see a crab scuttling around, going to curl up in a plush puffle bed. Being in a cage was almost insulting.

"You... You aren't going to eat me, are you?" Gary sat awkwardly in the corner of the cage.

"No, you moron, I'm a vegetarian!" Herbert barked at him, just filling up something with water from a stream in the corner of the cave. "Eating meat is barbaric, even I don't stoop that low..."

Gary questioned his morals for a moment before asking another question. "Why am I in this... pet cage? Do you have any sort of plan cooked up?!"

"I don't, actually, I just want the last laugh..." Herbert was carrying over a water bottle intended for rabbits and guinea pigs, it looked like, strapping it to the side of the cage.

"...this is humiliating." Gary covered his face with his flippers.

"Exactly. Even if I can't win I can at least humilate one of you." Herbert seemed to be lugging a large video camera from the side of the room, placing it on the table next to the cage and pointing it to Gary. "And, this will send a live feed to the EPF."

Gary wanted to cry with humiliation.

Gary somehow fell asleep on his back in the cage, staring up at the ceiling, drooling a little.

"Hey, guys! I found the cave again!" Rookie's voice.

A green penguin stumbled into the cave, followed by a purple penguin oddly dressed as a tree, and JPG waddling in without a care.

"Rookie, Herbert's asleep, don't wake him..." Dot clapped a flipper over Rookie's beak.

Rookie seemed to just stare at Gary asleep in semi disbelief before JPG picked up the cage. "Let's just get out of here quickly..." He spoke quietly.

Herbert was actually awake, staring at the group, but he actually didn't have any plans for anything so he just let them leave, quietly laughing as they left.

Gary crawled out of the pet cage onto the command room table, burying his face in his hands.

"...are you okay, G?" Rookie was the first to speak up.

"I just... I'd like someone to take me home. I need the rest of the day off." Gary shook his head.

"I'll take you back, G..." JPG slid out of his seat, gesturing to get Gary to follow him.

It was kind of late, and Gary was feeling a little hungry (and thirsty, he refused to drink from the water bottle) as he stepped outside. He shivered in the cold, looking over at JPG.

"Could you take me to the pizza parlour first...?" Gary asked, looking up at him. "I'm starved..."

"Oh? Of course..." JPG nodded and ended up scooping Gary up like he did with most penguins, flying him to the pizza parlour.

The pizza parlour was nice and warm, and JPG let himself leave while Gary stood on a stool in front of the counter.

The penguin at the front leaned over the counter and smiled. "Oh, Gary, want a small fish dish pizza?"

"I'd like large tonight, actually..." Gary murmured. He wanted his bad day to go away and this was the best way he could think.

"Alright, one large fish dish pizza coming up..." The penguin quickly dashed into the kitchen, and within 20 seconds, he came rushing back out with a pizza box.

"Um, are you going to be able to carry this?" The penguin looked down at him.

"I can do it, don't worry..." Gary reached up and took it, smiling weakly as a thank you before heading out the door.

The stars were all in the sky as Gary waddled back to his house slowly, carrying the large pizza that warmed his flippers. The stars fascinated him...

His igloo was a nice place. He kept the lighting dim and relaxing, placing the pizza box on his table, opening it and taking a deep sniff of the pizza he'd ordered...

Gary sat there, feeling relaxed and savouring the whole pizza, eventually feeling very full after only half the slices... At least he had the rest for tomorrow.

He put the rest of the pizza in the fridge, yawning and waddling into his own room.

He dressed himself in the most comforting snuggly pyjamas he had, before closing all the curtains and shutting the lights off, waddling to his sleeping couch.

He felt his puffle jump into his arms in the dark and smiled, hugging them close. He stared up at the ceiling and the glow in the dark stars arranged in the shapes of constellations.

Staring at the nightlight in the corner of his room, he eventually felt himself drifting off to sleep.
