(Time skip to high school)

After Juliana was done with school, Lucas pulls up in front of Juliana's house. Lucas just got his own truck and wanted to take Juliana home in it. She looks at her house hesitantly, afraid to go inside. It only took Lucas a mere moment to read her like a book, as he usually did. Sometimes Juliana swore he knew her better than she did. But in this case, she was making it way too obvious that there was something a bit off.

"Whas up with ya, Tweety bird?" She thought about how she knew her dad was already drinking, afraid of the beatings or the mental torture she would have to endure. Another sleepless night.

When Daddy wasn't traveling for work and leaving her alone to fend for herself, he was drinking and beat her when he could before passing out, arms hugging the toilet from puking. Mom left her with this poor excuse for a man and a father. She never asked what daddy dearest did for a job after she was caught looking through his files in the office when she was maybe six, if her memory served her well. She got the beating of her life and never again spoke of his job, never able to tell people what it was he did exactly for a living or how they could afford a big house.

"Nothing, just..." she said, unable to tell Lucas what was really plaguing her mind. He puts a comforting friendly arm around her and pulls her into a hug.

You're starting to sound like an idiot. Think of something to say to him besides your Daddy being an abusive drunk. Say its because you got a long chore list and you've been procrastinating in getting it done. Just something, woman!

But before she could say word, Lucas butted in.

"Y'know ahm able tah tell when ya lying' tah me. Ya get nervous, yer hands start shakin' a bit," he pulls away from hugging her and looks her in the eyes.

He couldn't help that he just fell for this girl as the years went on. Her cute short brown hair that complimented her face, her dark green eyes, which were now full of fear for her fucking life. He lifts a piece of hair from her face and looks under it like he's looking under a tarp, whistles at her like a bird. She cracks a weak smile.

"So, ya gonna tell me whas eating' ya or am ah gonna have tah tickle it outta ya?" She giggled her adorable giggle he had grown so accustomed to.

"Naw, you don't have to go to such extreme measures as... tickling," her smile soon disappeared when she looked back at her house, "its... its my dad. I bet you any money he started drinking by now. I just don't want to go in there. He'll be waiting." She put her face in her hands and started to breathe rapidly.

Just leave! Just run away! You don't need him anyhow. You got Lucas, you'll always have Lucas. He won't turn his back on you, no matter how crazy you are.

The voice became more relentless. The voice always liked Lucas and it kept quiet, for the most part, when he was around, when she is the happiest. When they're just hanging out by the bayou, skipping rocks and drinking beers, listening to metal play from the speakers of Lucas' Dad's truck. Dancing like lunatics. She wished she could do that everyday. If only.

"Waitin' fer what?" She doesn't answer. Just starts breathing faster and starts to panic. Lucas has only witnessed Juliana having a few panic attacks, but he was trying to remember what he should do. He can't recall and just scoots toward her and hugs her tightly. He could figure out what her dad was doing to his little Tweety bird without her having to chirp about it.

"Come tah mah house. Its about time ya met my folks." Her head shot up. She gets to meet his family? "Keep ya away from yer fuckface daddy fer a little while longer. Momma has been buggin' me tah bring ya over. I talk aboutcha enough."
