Darrel's Pov.
I woke up this morning knowing that today was the reaping. I got dressed, fatigue still lingering in my system. I walked to school with my younger sister, Chloe. Everything at school was the same. It dragged on to what seemed like forever, until the final bell rang. My sister and I left, knowing our walk home might be our last. When we arrived, our mother enveloped us in a hug and let us change into our fancy clothes for the reaping. God, if I go to the Hunger Games, I'll probably be one of those guys who die at spawn and are forgotten forever, I thought. Thank Notch there's a 1 percent chance I'm going to get into the hunger games, let alone me and my girlfriend, Jen.
"Darrel?" Chloe asked me as we approached town square. "How many tesserae did you get for us?"
"Well, I think about two, or three."
"How about Jen?"
"I don't know. You'll have to ask her."
"Do you think you're going to get reaped?"
I was speechless at this question. It took me a lot of thinking. What if I did? Well, I'd die. My family would be devastated. I was their only mining child. Then Dad would do the mining and maybe Chloe would do the farming. Then I thought that if I was reaped, I would fight to the end. I would try to win, no matter how hard.
So I answered, "I don't know."
Then William Gold, the man who would announce the reaping, stepped up to the podium.
"Good afternoon, and happy Hunger Games. As you know, I will announce the reaping. For District 7, District of Cobblestone"
William picked a strip of paper and said,
"Jen Hilson."
Jen was surprised, I could tell. She exchanged no tesserae, so there was only one strip with her name on it.
Then he read the second one.
"Darrel Reid."
My freaking Notch, I've been reaped, I thought.
I felt like cursing, but I was so shocked, I couldn't bring the words to come out of my mouth.
