On our way to the city, Viktor managed to convince me to leave the country. But I just couldn't imagine leaving all my friends behind, so I asked him he could lend me his yatch so i could have one last outing with my friends.
Once we were at the hospital I raced to the front desk and asked which room Jackson was in. The room Jackson was in had a large glass window at the front because no one was allowed in the room except his doctor. From where I stood my brother looked dead but I knew he wasn't because of the steady beeping of the machine. With all the tubes that were attached to his body I knew he was seriously hurt and on the verge of death. I broke down in Viktor's arms (which is something l don't usually do) and he tried to comfort me as best as he could but I didn't feel any better. It was all on me. If Jackson died I'd never forgive myself. And then again Dad was missing so my life felt like it was being torn apart. I mean I never liked the guy but if he died, especially because of me, I would feel slightly bad because he actually made Mom happy.
I sat outside the hospital room waiting for the doctor to come back. I began doing some thinking regarding Viktor's offer.
Should I really leave Yorkshire and start my life over? How had Vadim become aware that I was still alive? Was there anyone I could still trust? What was it really going to take to disappear again? If I had to run again, where exactly am I going to run to? Did Viktor have another safe house? Is it as big as the one he gave us to currently live in? How rich is this guy anyways? How much is he worth? Who was the girl that he got kicked out of the mafia for?
And now my mind is racing cause to tell the truth, I knew nothing about him except that he got kicked out of the Mafia for a woman and that he was waaaaay too young to be a principal at school; he's 21.
I got up out of my seat and went to the receptionist to ask where the doctor was. She said that he would be coming to speak with me in a moment call, he was getting some files ready. Not knowing what else to do, I sat down and took out my phone with the intention to call Viktor. His phone rings but goes to voicemail. As the moments pass by and the doctor has not come back I decide to look for him. I walk towards the doctor's office to give him a piece of my mind. When I open the door I sigh.
In the doctor's chair is a blooded figure with a cord wrapped tightly around his neck. On his desk is his phone with a note saying call me now if you value the life of those around you at the bottom was the number 6943 58910 3. I pick up the now dead doctor's phone and dial the number quickly.
After one ring the phone is answered, a heavily accented Russian voice answers sending chills down my spine.
"Good afternoon love I hope you love my handiwork I know you always did", he says in Russian.
Switching my accent and language to that of a Chinese I reply, "Excuse me, who is this? I am not understanding what you are saying."
His laugh rings out over the phone then he switches his voice to Chinese saying, "Come on dear, you know you can't fool me."
My breath hitches in my throat and for a second I lose my voice. Suddenly the phone is ripped from my grasp and thrown against the wall. It's shattered like a glass. Viktor spins me around violently asking if I have any sense at all. I argue with him saying that I was just trying to see who would answer the phone and I did not expect that Vadim would. Viktor pinches his nose and mutters that women are inquisitive. I take no offense to it as he says this about women on a daily basis. Sometimes I wonder how is he even married.
"How did Vadim know that you were here?" Viktor asks. "I don't know", I reply but then it clicks. I take my Vendetta mask out of the bag I carry around with my silver gun. As I walk through the door I put on the mask, placing the gun in the waist of my pants. As I walk to the receptionist's desk I pull out the gun and her eyes widen in fear. She jumps up and starts screaming that she didn't mean to do it and I shoot her several times. Persons start screaming and I casually walk out of the hospital.
I head to Viktor's car and take a seat on the hood, waiting for Viktor to come out. I pull off the Vendetta mask just as he walks out of the hospital. He is not angry, I know this because of the small smile on his face. He rests his hand on my knee and says,"How did you know?" I shrugged saying," I didn't, I just took a risk." He hands me a phone that would seem to be the receptionist's and in her phone were several calls to a number labeled V-39. This is a code used by persons involved with the Markov Mafia.
We hop into the car and head to the hotel where my mother is waiting. When we open the door to the hotel room my mother flies forward and starts rambling with questions about Jackson. I told her that the doctor is dead because Vadim killed him so we got no news. She breaks down so Viktor and I walk away, knowing there's nothing to do when she starts crying. I take a beer from the fridge and open it with my teeth. I sit on the counter and watch as Viktor makes his way slowly over to the coach, he drops down into it face-first as if he was very tired. I smile thinking that he is cute but then I frown remembering that the guy is married plus he is an ex-mafia member.
What is my life coming to?
