Fear (8 years earlier) (Prologue)

Lights are flickering...bumps on the dirt trail shake the transport...in the lines with others like me...ready to run into combat...I never wanted this. Nobody did...but here we are, rifle in hand and our group scared. We would arrive any second now...and when the heavy metal door slammed open, we would charge. Most of the front row will die immediately, pumped full of lead right from the start, I know. We were all young, either just out of 6th grade or about to graduate high-school. It was a horrible life we all lived. I was snapped out of my thoughts by my friend beside me, Adam. He was forced into this like I was. I'm hoping we both get out of this.

-"No turning back now." he said.

I nodded. Just as I finished my nod, the whole transport shook...we had arrived. The massive clamps of the main gate unlocked, depressurizing the deployment bay. Engines and motors of various vehicles roared to life behind us. They say that we have a vital role in this, but I know the truth...we're cannon fodder...a distraction. The first chance I get, I'm running. I don't care anymore, Adam and I are leaving as soon as we can. The giant hydraulics lowered the main gate slowly. Once it finally slammed onto the dirt...my ears were filled with horrific sounds. Gunfire, explosions, screams of agony, battle cries and mortars pummeling the front lines. I immediately dashed for the closest trench. I had the luck to make it. The automated turrets were shredding through the cannon fodder...just like that bastard of a general wanted. I don't know who is the one leading this attack but I hope they die first. I looked to my sides to see soldiers hopping over the trench I was in to press the attack. Madmen, most of the ones that were shot fell into the trench.

...So...

...Many...

...Dead...

Then I heard a feeble call for help. I don't know why but that single cry stood out from all of the others to me. I looked at the source to see something I never wished to see. Adam...crippled. I rushed to his side to see that it was much worse than I thought. Several holes through vital organs, ripped out bones, eyes bloodshot. He was in too much pain. I don't have my tools to help him! I told them I'd be the best field medic ever, they didn't listen. "We need more foot soldiers" they said. Yeah right, but with no one helping those soldiers, they're all doomed. I have a reputation for healing people that look ready for the body bag in less than a few hours, and they perceived my talents as useless. I'll show them. I did the best I could to help Adam with the dirt and sticks around us. That seemed to help with the pain seeing as he was no longer screaming but he was rapidly losing blood......he wouldn't make it. He looked at me as I looked at him.

-"I'm sorry my friend...there is nothing I can do..." I said with guilt.

-"Don't feel bad...you-ah!...you did great work so far, I believe that you'll do great things. Now Leo, you know the old saying right?" he asked.

I knew exactly what he was talking about.

-"Yes...for the wolf to survive, it's gotta chew off its own leg. In this case...you're the leg, our friendship is the wolf." I said.

-"That's right, so do it Leo." he demanded.

I hated what I was about to do but hey, doctor assisted suicide isn't so bad when you think about it...

-"I'm sorry." I said as I swiftly cracked his neck.

He fell limp in my arms...cold, lifeless. I felt sorrow within me as I stood up. I peeked over the top of the trench to see that we had taken the advantage, the turrets destroyed and most of their men dead. I got up out of the trench to push forward.

I got up out of the trench to push forward

3 HOURS LATER

We ended up winning the battle, but at a great cost. Adam, a great friend, who would always encourage me to keep my healing affinity and...probably most of the population under 18 years of age. Adam, I will never forget. I swear to you that I will become the scourge of medical expertise! I'll make our enemies suffer. No matter what it takes...or how long.
