Chapter 2: Wacky weekend

Lucy P.O.V

I rapped my knuckles of Elizabeth's window. I could hear her from my bedroom, her nightmares have been getting worse every day this week. I knocked again when she didn't hear me. I could see her thrashing about in bed, whimpering.

When she didn't wake up I sighed and took my necklace off. When Lizzy was ten she gave me a key to her window so I could come in when my dad hit me and she wasn't there. I pushed the key into the lock and twisted it but it didn't unlock. I frowned and turned the lock again but the key wouldn't move.

Lizzy started screaming loudly, something flickering in the corner of the room. Fire. Crap!

"Lizzy! Wake up!" I screamed, trying to unlock the window. The key wouldn't move. I banged my hand on the window. The fire started spreading around the room. Lizzy was still asleep, screaming.

"Lizzy!" I shout again, banging my fist on the window, the double glazed window wouldn't break under my weak hands. I had to get in there.

Jumping back on the tree I climbed back into my window. I ran down the stairs as fast as I could, bursting out of the front door.

"Mrs Roberts! Mrs Roberts!" I bang my fists on the front door. The door was locked; I was still in my pyjamas which consisted on one of my big tops and pyjama shorts.

"Lucy!" I heard Mrs R on the other side of the door but she wasn't opening up.

"Mrs R, there's a fire in Lizzy's room!" I shout through the door, banging on it again in panic. The door swung open to reveal a flustered and tired Mrs R. She didn't wait around, she ran straight up the stairs in the direction of Liz's room. I run after her, my breath raspy.

When I got to the bedroom, there was no fire. Liz sat on the edge of her bed, gasping for air, choking as if there really was a fire. Mrs R ran to her daughter's side, just in time for Liz to collapse into her mother's arms.

"Call an ambulance!" Mrs R was clearly panicked as she laid her daughter on the floor in the recovery position to clear her airways. Lizzy coughed, her legs curling up as she coughed violently, coughing up blood.

I didn't waste time; I ran to Lizzy's bedside and grabbed her phone. No signal. Crap! I threw the phone on the bed and ran to grab the house phone. The line was dead.

"I'll go to my house!" I shout as I run out of the front door and into my house, grabbing the phone and calling nine, nine, nine. I make the call quickly, telling them to get an ambulance here fast then I go back to her house.

The next thing I know Liz was being rushed off in an ambulance and I stood in the middle of the road alone in the dark street in my pyjamas, the shock settling in.

I could have sworn I saw that fire but when I went to check the wall, it was undamaged and when I went to get my key out of the window lock it unlocked fine. Something weird was going on and I didn’t like it. Not one little bit.

“What time do you call this?” I stiffened, my dad spoke with his usual slurred words, swaying slightly in the doorway to my bedroom. I close my bedroom window and mentally prepared myself for what was coming.

“Elizabeth was taken into hospital.” I speak quietly because I knew that he didn’t care for an answer but if I didn’t give one then he’d order one.

I flinched as he stumbled towards me, angry.
