FOURTEEN

JOSH

In art class, it was calm and awkward between the three of us; me, Tyler, and Debby.

Something definitely happened upstairs between them, and I'm going to find out what. Whatever it takes, I just want to know what happened to Tyler.

What could've happened? It involved Brendon too. Maybe Brendon was having sex with some girl and then Debby got mad and kicked him out?

Then what was Tyler doing in that situation?

This is too confusing, even for me. I'm concerned about the both of them. I want to be able to help Tyler with what had happened, Debby too.

"How's everyone's self portraits going? If anyone needs help with tracing a part of your face, then please come up to me now." Mr. Hendricks said, rubbing his hands together, looking around.

"Okay, take the rest of the period to work on your assignment." Mr. Hendricks said after everyone nodded, and a few people walked up to him for help.

I turned towards Tyler with a small smile. "Can you come over after school, darling?"

Tyler returned the smile. "Of course. Anything you want to talk about in particular?"

"What happened last night at Debby's party?" I asked, finishing up my drawing then setting it aside.

Tyler's smile faltered. He changed his gaze to look forward at the whiteboard. There was a short line of kids waiting for Mr. Hendricks' assistance.

"Nothing. I'm serious, Josh. Nothing at all happened at Debby's party. She– She just found me, throwing up in the bathroom. I had a headache. I drank too much."

"Are you positive? I care about you, Ty. I want to help you."

Tyler looked up, deciding whether or not with whatever was going on inside his mind. His mouth was opened, only slightly, with astonishment. Finally, he said, "I'm positive."

Debby tapped me on the shoulder, making me turn around to see her. Her loose hair was up in bun today. "I'm having another party tonight. Do you want to come?"

I held up one finger then turned to Tyler. "Debby is having another party. Want to come?"

"Not tonight, but you can. It's fine; I wouldn't mind." He said.

I smiled again at him then turned back to Debby. "Yeah. Just me this time."

She nodded then turned away and mumbled something similar to, "I can't blame him."

  Why?

"You're so beautiful, Ty." I said, pecking Tyler on the neck.

We had decided that he'd come over until I left for the party, then Tyler would go home. What if I just stayed with him?

"Yeah?" Tyler said. His coffee eyes were closed, and he hummed sweetly.

"Yeah." I replied. I kissed him deeply on the mouth then hopped off the bed, causing Tyler to open his eyes. "Why don't we go somewhere for a while?"

"Where do you have in mind?"

I hummed in response. I grabbed my black skater Vans and slipped them on. I grabbed Tyler by his hands then pulled him up.

He put on his maroon Vans then grabbed my hand, lacing up or fingers. We walked down the stairs in a comfortable silence.

My parents weren't home; they're out of town on a trip together, leaving me, Abigail, and Ashley alone. Right now, Ashley and Abigail were out finding dresses for the prom still.

I opened my car door for him then shut it and did the same for me. Tyler said, "Where are we going?"

"The park." I answered him. He chuckled then kissed me on the lips.

"Why don't we walk to the park then?"

I laughed and said, "The nearest park is two miles away. I'm not walking that much."

Tyler laughed then turned to look outside the window with a smile. He truly delighted me.

"I'm not going to go to Debby's party. I'd rather stay with you than drink all night." I said once we were close.

Tyler turned to look at me. "Josh, if you want to go, you can. I'll be fine by myself."

"What if I want to stay with you?"

"Then stay with me. But, really, you should go have fun and drink and stuff."

I scoffed with playfulness. "And wake up tomorrow with a migraine? No thanks."

Tyler sighed dramatically. He leaned in and kissed my cheek, even though I was driving. "Okay."

We arrived at the park. I drove my car into one of the slots across the street, then we walked around the park, laughing at nonsense, until dark.

We stopped at a small bridge that was over a river, leaning against the railing with our arms crossed.

I looked over at Tyler, who was staring over into the water with a slight and unnoticeable frown. Of course, I noticed it; I noticed almost everything about him.

The way his eyes glint and crinkle up at the sides when he smiles. The way his mouth lifts up. The way he smells like flowers all the time. The way his laugh sounds. The way he said my name.

Everything about him was perfect to me, and I love that about him.

I love him.
