Running up to Kuroko was the first thing Zaeri did in the morning. Afterall, she was really worried for him since he was absent yesterday after that horrible incident happened.
She gave some thought into it last night. Kuroko must've been experiencing those terrible things since they started sixth grade because that's when he became distant and less energetic. That's when everything about him took a drastic change for the worse, and all Zaeri could do was think about any possible reason for him to be like that.
But now she knows. She saw a portion of what he's been through.
"Are... Are you alright?" She asked in a soft voice.
Kuroko looks up at her through the book he's reading and that's when she noticed his pale face and bruised lip. He nodded slightly, "Yes... But how about you?"
"I'm fine!" She breaks a smile and then sits down beside him, hoping to ease the tension by looking at the book, "New book?"
"Found it yesterday," While hiding from dad, but Kuroko couldn't say that out loud.
"Ah! That's right, the book I borrowed from you last week," She shuffled into her bag and pulled out an old looking book, "Your grandma has good taste for books,"
"Yes," Kuroko nodded and took the book in his hands.
The old purple hardbound cover of the book had the picture of a large sun at the center and black shadows all around it. The words 'Reaching the Light' were inscribed on the top in gold color. The book was a gift from his grandmother on his 9th birthday and he loved it. He read it for how many times already and now Zaeri shared it too.
"Where does your grandma live?" Zaeri asked.
"In Tokyo,"
"Oh. That's far," She murmured, "You must miss her alot,"
"I do." He smiled a bit and placed the book back in his bag. Then with a soft voice, he muttered, "She's better..."
Zaeri blinked and stared, "What was that?"
"Nothing,"
Then the bell rang and the class started heading back to their seats. With a smile, Zaeri left for hers and Kuroko returned it with his.
The small sign of reassurance gave Zaeri some hope on the situation. At least Kuroko felt okay now, she thought.
But she was wrong to place assumptions on moments only.

Things took a wrong turn the next day. Things that she feared for the worst. The news didn't come till lunchtime when she went to ask why Kuroko was absent to their teacher.
"Kuroko-kun?" The teacher asked thoughtfully before looking around, "He's absent?"
Zaeri felt frustration boil up, "Why wouldn't you know?" She hissed, biting her bottom lip, "You're our teacher!"
So the said teacher phoned the father while Zaeri waited beside her, wishing that nothing happened beyond her imagination.
"Hello? This is Kuroko-kun's homeroom teacher," She paused and looked at Zaeri for a while before continuing, "May I ask why Kuroko-kun is absent?"
Zaeri watched her closely, feeling all nauseaus when she saw the way her teacher's face turn into a face of panic.
"He's been hospitalized? Oh Gods... What happened?"
Zaeri's eyes widened and she felt like the world just collapsed. She just watched, without hearing anything they were talking about through the phone. Then, she took a small, shaky step towards the teacher and tugged on her sleeves when she closed the call.
"T-teacher... What happened? Ku-Kuroko's been... Hospitalized...?" She asked with a shaking voice.
The teacher leaned down and hugged her, "He's been... Hurt. He's resting in the hospital for now,"

Zaeri rushed through the hallways of the hospital in panic, forgetting that her mother was behind her. According to her mom, he was staying at the second floor at room 64. She didn't bother looking around anymore because all senses were drowned out by the fear she was having.
The moment the numbers 64 came into view, she stopped, trying to catch her breath before knocking politely.
"Come in," Came a voice unfamiliar to her, probably droned out by the door.
She pushed open the door and stepped in, seeing two unfamiliar faces. One was probably Kuroko's mother because her hair was powder blue but her eyes were a beautiful shade of brown. The other lady was an old woman with grey hair and blue eyes behind spectacles.
On the bed was Kuroko Tetsuya himself, with bandages wrapped around his arms and forehead. He looked even paler than usual.
"Kuroko-kun..." She muttered in disbelief.
"Is this the Zaeri girl you're talking about?" The old lady asked while adjusting her glasses, "She looks so pretty,"
Instead of blushing from the comment, she ran up to the teal haired boy and took his hand in hers, "A-are you alright, Kuroko..?"
"Yes. I'm sorry for worrying you," He put up a small forced smile and looked away.
That's when she realized that she had somehow intruded something. Zaeri looked from Kuroko to the two females in the room who also had a solemn, down-casted look. She gulped down the knot that formed in her throat as her grip on his hand tightened.
But before she could say anything or question things any further, Kuroko's mom had caught their attention by clearing her throat.
"Tetsuya, why don't you tell your friend about... Our agreement," She smiled and led the grandmother out.
The moment they shut the door, Kuroko sighed. Zaeri watched him cautiously as she sat down by the foot of the bed. A few minutes passed by before he actually spoke in a really soft voice that she didn't quite catch.
"Pardon?" She asked.
Kuroko inhaled before looking at her sternly, "We're moving."
She tilted her head innocently, "Another room?"
"I mean... I'm moving to Tokyo with my grandma,"
Zaeri bit her lip, "When..?" She dared ask.
"As soon as posssible," He pats his lap absent-mindedly, "Or when the doctors say I can go,"
"Did... Did he do this?" She glared at him, "Your dad?"
"Yes." He deadpanned and then dismissed the subject by looking away.
Zaeri nodded and looked out the window with him. The serenity of the sunset kept them calm, but somewhere deep within themselves, an inner turmoil was already brewing.
It's only a matter of time before Zaeri could really lose sight of her teal-haired friend.
