"Hey Pete, how's your mom doin today?" I ask softly, setting my hand on top of his. "Better right?"

"I don't know, I guess? They said she's not getting any better. They've tried everything, Y/N. Why is my mom dying?" He whispers, head staring straight at the cracked pavement of the school playground. "I'm going to see her after school. Like, I told them right after. I gotta go see mom."

"It's great she has you, Peter. Hey, do you wanna go play kickball or something to cheer you up?" I look at him, smiling. He nods slowly, looking over at the other kids. "Y'know you're my best friend right, Pete?"

"Yeah, and you're my best friend too. You're like my only friend here." He huffs, crossing his arms.

"You make that sound bad! I'm cool!" I yell, throwing my arms up. He laughs softly, looking up at me.

"You're stupid." He smiles, standing up and extending a hand. "C'mon I wanna play kickball before we go back to class." I take his hand and pull him with me. We join in the kicking line, spending out last few minutes in the hot sun playing kickball. The teacher blows the whistle and we all complain as we go to line up.

"Hey, since we might not see each other the rest of the day, I'll see you tomorrow, Pete!" I smile, hugging him lightly. "Tell your momma I said hi!" I yell, waving as I go to join my class.

"I will! Bye Y/N!"
