On the receiving end of sympathy
From acquaintances, friends and family
Is never a good place to be,
Especially as Ebenezer is married to me.
He’s a miserable man – spends day and night alone
In an office so cold he’s chilled to the bones
But he doesn’t care as long as it’s shown
That his heart, once golden, has been turned to stone.
The son of his apprentice, Tommy, is a cripple -
He is dearly loved but with the lightest tickle
Insufferable pain is caused, cured only with a tipple
But Ebenezer doesn’t care about other’s troubles.
Years ago in a final attempt to make him care
I hired an actor who I found spare
To be a ghost and give Scrooge a scare,
Show that in his life there is no-one there.
But I hurt only myself; my efforts failed.
The sinner that he is was at last unveiled.
The ship of our love had truly sailed –
I learnt the hard way: goodness does not always prevail.
