Survival of the fittest. I guess you could call it that. Back in the 21st century, most people didn't have to worry about struggling to survive and going through survival of the fittest. Today in the year 2217, you either fight to survive or die. There is no inbetween. Civilization as you know it is gone. Thank the scientists at SOTD, Science Of The Dead. Scientists have been trying to find out how to bring the dead back to life since the beginning of time. In the year 2210, the scientists at SOTD found out how to do exactly that. The first person they brought back to life was of course Walt Disney. Why they did, I have no clue. The undead, or lurkers as we call them, started out acting human. They had a very hard time transitioning from when they were alive before to now. One by one, the lurkers started turning and attacking people and basically acting inhuman. Towns were getting ripped apart all over the world. Eventually every country was just destroyed. People were left trying to survive. Kids became orphans from parents being killed by the lurkers, parents lost their children, families were ripped apart, some literally. It was a huge mess. Those movies, books, and tv shows that try to show what the zombie apocalypse is like are far from right. It's 10 times worse than you could ever imagine. You're constantly looking over your shoulder making sure a lurker won't get you or a human won't come up and kill you for your supplies. You're never save. Those camps that they show where its like a little city and no one lurkers can get in, don't exsist. People are constantly on the run making sure you aren't seen or heard by lurkers.
"Scarlet! Get your ass over here and help me try to baracade this door!" The voice of my friend, and the only person I can trust, and lurkers banging at the door snap me back to reality. "Sorry!" I say rushing over and helping her move a table in front of the door. We push a book case in front of the table. I sigh as I put my gun away. Since we don't have lurkers trying to kill us, I can finally see where we are. I look around and notice we're in a small house. It looks like it's from the 21st century. We're in a small front room of the house. There's a recliner and a desk with a chair in here. "We should scope out the house," my friend, Ophelia, says. "Yea, I'll check out the second floor. You check this floor," I say taking out my knife from my boot. "Okay, be careful," Ophelia says. "You too," I say. I quietly climb the stairs to the second floor. I keep my hands up, ready to kill anything that tries to attacks me. I check the first room on the left. It's a little kid's room. I look around and see no one in here. I check the closet and find nothing but clothing and boxes. I leave the room and go to the next room. I notice it's a master bedroom. I check to make sure no one is in here before going to the last room. I can tell it's a teenage girl's room just by the look of it. There's no one in here. Since this floor's all clear, I put my knife away. I start going through the girl's room. I assume she's either left the state or dead. So, I don't think she'll mind me taking some of her stuff. I grab a sweatshirt and some leggings that she has that happen to fit me perfectly. I stuff them into my backpack before going to the master bedroom. There's a full bottle of water on the nightstand, so I take it. I take some clothing that Ophelia might want before going to the little kid's room. I look around and find another full water bottle. I grab it for Ophelia. As I'm closing my backpack up, I hear a scream and a loud bang. Not a gun shot, Ophelia is smart enough to know not to shoot a gun without it being the only way out. I fling my backpack over my shoulder and rush downstairs. "Ophelia!" I shout. "In the kitchen!" I hear her yell back. I rush into the kitchen to see Ophelia standing there with her gun pointing towards the window above the sink and a lurker half in the window not moving. I pull out my knife. I go over to the window and make sure the lurker's dead. I poke him with my knife. No movement. Good he's dead. I face Ophelia and say, "put your gun away before I shoot you with it." Ophelia puts her gun away as I put my knife away. "Are you sick? Do you need a break?" I ask her. "No, I'm fine," she says. "Then why did you shoot the fucking lurker?! You know we don't use our guns unless we have a herd of them following us!" I shout at her. "I was scared it was going to get in, okay?" Ophelia says defensively. "Whatever. Just grab as much food and water as you can. I'll go see if this place has a car I can hot wire," I say taking my gun out. I make sure it's loaded before heading out back. I quietly make my way to the front of the house. I spot a black pickup truck in the front of the house in the driveway. We're currently in the middle of the woods, by the way. I notice that the lurkers aren't at the front door anymore. I quietly rush over to the pickup truck. Thankfully, it's unlocked. I hop in and put my stuff in the back seats. I look through the car to see if I can find keys. I flip down the blind thing and car keys fall onto my lap. "Oh please have gas," I say quietly as I try to start the engine. After turning the key a couple of times, the car starts up. I check the gas and see we have a full tank of gas. How we do, I have no idea. I put the car in drive and drive to the back of the house. Ophelia is rushing out of the house with two more backpacks, besides hers. She hops in the passenger seat and closes the door. I start to drive away from the house as Ophelia puts her backpack with my stuff. "Any plan to where we should be going?" I ask as I follow the path that leads out of the woods. "Where are we now?" Ophelia asks. "Like an hour north from Springfield, Virginia," I say. "Let's try New York City. They should have some supplies there," she says. "Alright. The Big Apple it is," I say. Ophelia and I sit in silence for what feels like forever.
