**The 'new guys' name is now Jasper, not Daniel***Saturdays are always my favourite. No school, no homework, no late's. I guess no school in general kinda makes me happy.
I sit on my bed, feeling a spring by my foot. Although we live in the "hood", and our house is a wreck, I manage to keep my room normal. Pale blue walls, posters and drawings by my door. My clothes tucked are tucked in a drawer by a small window. My black sheets are the nicest things in my room, it took me lots of hours at the cafe doing the dishes to buy it.
Yelling from outside catches my attention away from my book. I walk over to the window. I peer out of my big window and find the source of the noise. Jasper stands in his backyard yelling at someone on his deck that I can't see."Your a drunk, don't touch my mother again." I could barely hear it through the glass. I see a bulked man step of there small back deck and walk to Jasper. He throws a lazy punch at him and Jasper ducks, then lays a harder one to his side. I gasp and cover my mouth with eyes wide. I turn away not able to look. I turn back to the window after a few minutes in time to see jasper walking angrily to the front of his house and pulling out a motor bike from his garage. He hops on and drives away before looking up at my window.
I can't help but stare back not able to look away. He winks up at me then speeds off to god knows where. My heart races as I stare after his fading trail.
________The sun blazes through my neon green glasses. My blue two piece bathing suit helps create tan lines I desire most. "So tell us again what happened?" Derek repeats for the third time today. " I already told you guys, I met him Thursday night on the roof." I say with my eyes shut and laying lazily on the chair in Derek's backyard. "It just sounds so romantic! Makes me want to puke." Says Kim as she takes a sip of orange juice with a purple bendy straw. I smirk.
"We should invite him to the movies on Tuesday. Toonie Tuesdays are my favourite. Besides he will probably say yes since you guys are buddy buddy." Derek says with his feet hanging over the edge of the pool. "Derek we are definitely not buddy's, I've met him once, I didn't even really talk to him." I say sitting up, putting my shades on top of my head.
"Chillax Tess, no need to get defensive." Kim says.
"Hello kiddos! More juice?" Derek's mother asks coming outside of there freaking mansion with a tray in hand with three glasses filled with the orange liquid. "Mom, I told you were fine." Derek groans. I don't know why he gets like that with his mom, if she was mine, I'd never leave the house.
"Ok Derek. Tess and Kim?" She offers to us. I grab one smiling and saying a quick thank you.
"Derek when are you going to tell your mom?" Kim says. "I don't know. Maybe if I get serious with someone, but not yet." I don't say anything. "Jeez guys, now I feel depressed." Derek laughs. "Let's go to the beach and throw rocks at the birds." Kim says getting up to pull her shorts and sweater over her bathing suit.
_______
I didn't stay at the beach very long. Derek and Kim were planning to stay there a while longer but the sun was starting to set and I had a long ways to walk home. I love that my house is far away from everything because my walks help me relax.
I walk down the paths taking notice of the neighbourhoods changing from the elegant, to modern, to normal, then the dumps. I just finished crossing an almost empty street when the rumble of a engine caught me by surprise. The dim street lights show a figure speeding towards me.
A motorbike races past me then stops at the end of the street. The person on the bike starts moving it backwards. I furrow my brows, knowing I should probably get away.
The person stops it right in front of me and I notice it's Jasper. "What are you doing out here? It's not safe enough in this area to be walking around alone, especially not girls like you." He smirks.
"What's that supposed to mean?" I ask putting a hand on my hip. "It means whatever you want it to. I'll give you a ride, hop on." He slides forward on his bike leaving room for me. "I'm not getting on that death trap!" I exclaim giving him a dumbfounded look.
I start walking away but he follows ever so annoyingly. "Would you leave me alone?" I ask not looking at him. "I don't take no for an answer." Was his reply. "If I do you have to promise that you will buy me another pack." I say. "Another pack of what? Smokes?" I nod exaggeratedly. "How's that fair? I give you a ride, and buy you another pack?" Jasper's smug face is defined in the street lamp. His engine hums as he goes along side me.
"Well you seem to want to give me a ride home, so it only seems fair." I laugh. "Jesus kid, fine I'll get you a pack. You're already addicted I see?" He chuckles.
I actually hadn't touched another smoke from the first pack he had given me, I just wanted to see if he really did want to get me home safely.
I smile and hop onto the back of the bike. I wrap my arms tight around his waist, brace my legs and hope for the best.
He speeds off and I feel like the seat is about to slip right out from under me. I squealed at first, not prepared for the motion. He laughs and goes faster. My hair blows through the wind packing me full of adrenaline.
The ride was shorter than it seemed and when we reached our ratted homes, I felt a sort of sadness. I kinda liked the ride.
"That was amazing!" I laughed as I got off the bike smoothly. He made a deep laughing sound and I stood there smiling like an idiot. "Well I don't know if you'd be interested but.... Derek Kim and I are going to the movies Tuesday, and if you wanted to come you can." I said looking down.
"I don't do play dates." He says leaning against his bike, his arms folded across his chest. "Never mind it was a stupid idea, forget I said anything." I rushed out and made my way across our joined lawn and onto my front porch. My hand grasped the door knob.
"Ya I'll come, I got nothing better to do anyway, but only if you really want me to." He smirks.
I roll my eyes. "Ok then, it's a date." My face turns red, I'm glad for the night sky so he didn't notice it. "Not a date-I mean just friends-my friends, and you." I stutter which makes him laugh even more. He pulls out a fresh smoke from his pocket and lights it against his lips.
"Goodnight Tess."
"Goodnight Jasper."
