We stumble toward the entrance. Handing our tickets to the less than intimidating bouncer, we finally set foot on the festival grounds. The music that was just a background noise was now more than apparent. The amount of stimulation was overwhelming. My senses were drawn in every direction. Exploring the grounds, we passed by two of the five large stages, a crowd was beginning to form while a band's crew performed their sound check. Carnival games and rides were set up among the grounds, including a large ferris wheel that flashed brightly colored neon lights and hummed out that god awful carnival music.
"Oh! We have to go up there together before we leave!" Ali squealed.
"Ali its barely noon, on Friday and we have three whole days here. We'll ride it!" Devin noted.
"Okay. Just promise me, we won't forget." I shot Ali a smile and gently squeezed her arm.
"We won't forget."
Walking further down the lot we hit the asphalt and rows and rows of tents selling tons of merchandise, band tees to bracelets, purses and hats galore. Along with tents promoting organizations that speak out against self-harm, depression, and cancer. We came upon a small tent selling beautiful handmade jewelry. I picked up a small multicolored hemp woven bracelet with a small blue stone inside.
"Oh An, thats gorgeous. And so you. You should get it." Ali said admiring the bracelet.
"Eh. I don't know. Do I really need another bracelet?" I said looking at my wrist piled with bracelets and old festival bands. Devin peers over staring at my wrist as well.
"Is that...please tell me thats not the bracelet Matt gave you!" She snaps, pointing to the tan leather bracelet with my name engraved into it. I pull my wrist down to my side.
"I don't wear it because he gave it to me. I wear it because it's a nice bracelet!" I snap back.
"Right. Yeah I can tell that he spent some quality cash on that thing" she says getting snarky with me.
"Why are you being such a bitch about Matt?" I yell."Well someone has to be! God knows you aren't! You act as if you aren't even mad at him. You just mope around waiting for him to call to say he wants you back. Newsflash Anna! He isn't coming back. He left you. And you have every god damn right to be pissed at him but instead you justify everything he does! I bet you to justify why he dumped you for that bitch Karen! But the honest truth is, there is no justifying it. He's an ass and that's it!" she takes a moment to catch her breath.
There is silence. I say nothing and Ali stands beside us, unsure of how to react. My face has grown red. Partially from anger at Devin and the other part due to embarrassment.
"I'm...I'm sorry. I...I didn't mean to snap...I just...I feel..." Devin stumbles.
"No! Please! Say no more." I interrupt, putting my hand up to stop her. "I think you have clearly expressed how you feel about my behavior." I place the bracelet back down on the table. "I'm gonna go grab some food. I'll see you guys later."
"No! Anna!" Ali pleads. "Stay, c'mon...we can..."
"No really. I just need some time by myself. I'll meet up with you guys later. Okay?"
Ali sighs deeply but knows there is no arguing with me. "Yeah okay, Yellowcard is playing at the Riot Stage at 2, meet us there?"
"Yeah sounds good." I reply before shooting Devin a look.
She turns her face averting her eyes away from me. She bites her lip and pretends to stare at the other jewlery and not notice me leaving. I roll my eyes and exit the tent making my way towards the food trucks. By the time I reached them my stomach was growling. Every type of food you could imagine, they had; deepfried, from onion rings to grilled cheese and twinkies. Along with ethnic food from about twenty different countries. I decided to keep it simple and order a corn dog with mustard. As I reached for my wallet to hand the lady a ten, I was suddenly engulfed in someone's arms as they picked me up and pulled me from spot and set me back down again.
"What the fu...??" I yell, whipping around, fist bunched ready to punch this grabby asshole.
"Woah!" He yells releasing his grip and backing away from me hands up in the air. He's a lot cuter than I expected an asshole to be. He's tall with sandy brown hair, soft warm brown eyes and a light five o'clock shadow that gives his face a nice shape. "No reason to get violent! I was just saving you!"
"Saving me from what??" I snap.
"That golf cart. It was about to hit you and didnt want such a beautiful girl to get run over!"
"What golf cart???"
"That one." He says pointing at the golf cart driving recklessly away in the distance.
"Oh." I say calming my temper. "Thanks. But I dont need any saving."
"Oh I think you do. But that's not my job. Where's your boyfriend? Isnt he supposed to do your saving?" I give him a small smirk.
"Well, not that its any of your business but, I don't have a boyfriend." I sigh.
"Oh well in that case, Hi I'm John" He smiles holding his hand out to me.
"Oh god." I roll my eyes. "Is this how you pick up women?"
"Only the really pretty ones." He winks. I scoff, shaking my head.
"Don't you have a name?" He inquires.
"Yeah... not interested."
"Well come on there, 'not interested' you have'nt even given me a shot!"
"Alright fine. I'm Anna." I say, shaking his hand.
"It's very nice to meet you, Anna. Can I buy you a beer?"
"I dont think so." I shug starting to walk away.
"Come on! One beer! If I dont have you totally infatuated with me by the time you finish your glass, doubtful but possible nonetheless, you can leave and we can pretend we never met!"
"Wow. Someone seems rather confident. What makes you so sure I'll fall for you??" I say stepping towards him.
"Well about two minutes ago, you wanted to slit my throat and now, you're having a drink with me, so I'd say I'm off to a pretty good start."
