The Reservers Chapter 9, a romance fiction |
The next morning Wade and I parked in the back of the lot and made our way toward the entrance. Jared was still at home, his suspension wasn't over yet.
I had a gnawing feeling in the pit of my stomach as we walked next to each other, but this one was different. This one was a feeling of anticipation and I knew exactly why. Wade hadn't asked anything since Rachel Calloway's visit last night. He hadn't mentioned a word of it and I assumed he already knew. He probably already had known since we moved and first encountered the Reservers. I had no idea how but my brother was intuitive and always knew the things I wanted to say or do before I could voice them.
I stopped in my tracks when we got closer to the front parking lot.
I shouldn't have been surprised to see them leaning back against their cars as if they were waiting for something, for someone.
Waiting for me.
All their eyes were on me. Wade didn't stop. He just gave me a quick smirk before he passed me and continued toward the doors, leaving me alone with their gazes still centered on me.
I faced them, the feeling of anticipation in my stomach multiplying. It was almost like a stare down. They stared at me and I stared at them and waited for one of them, any of them to say something but it seemed as if they were expecting the same from me.
It must have only took a few seconds before something happened but it felt like an eternity.
"So are you just going to stand there or are you going to join us? The bell's about to ring." Jensen Davenport spoke, a hint of amusement in his tone. In fact, they all had small smiles or smirks on their faces, including Samuel.
I had no idea how to take it. I hid my surprise and finally moved.
When I took a step forward they all finally moved as well. Nathan and Beverly were the first ones, walking together hand in hand toward the entrance. Then they were followed by Samuel and Jensen. Rachel was the last one. She waited for me to catch up to her and when I did, she just smiled at me and hooked her arm through mine and led me toward the entrance, after the rest.
I heard the whispers and I felt the stares. It felt surreal. Nathan and Beverly didn't even have to separate their hands together to open the doors. It was already done for them from bystanders, for all of us.
It seemed everyone was staring at me and instead of feeling self-conscious or intimidated I felt the exact opposite. I suddenly felt a surge of confidence burst within me. I knew everyone would have their thoughts and opinions but at that moment I couldn't be bothered by them. It was almost an out of body experience. I now understood why they seemed to glow whenever I saw them. There was this...aura or energy, this sense of belonging just being in their presence. It was indescribable. God knew there was so much more I didn't know about these people but for whatever reason, my instincts were telling me that this, this moment right here was right. Like Rachel had said, this was what I needed.
"I like your shoes by the way," Rachel said as we continued down the hall.
I felt the heat on my face. I didn't know if it was mostly my subconscious but I had made an effort to dress up that morning. My hair was down in curly waves and the shoes on my feet were a pair of one of the few designer pumps I owned. The comment from Rachel meant that they had all noticed.
"Thanks." I said. My voice hadn't matched the confidence I felt. I might have been comfortable among them but they themselves still made me self-conscious. As if I had to have their approval at all cost.
