All of a sudden, it seemed like everything was going to be alright.
And then a piercing scream filled the air around us, my stomach lurched and I turned around.
My eyes widened as I watched Emile's petrified face as she was swallowed whole by a Titan.
Tears pricked the corners of my eyes.
Peter screamed in anguish at the loss of Emile, his voice full of rage and hatred, he boosted himself into the air thoughtlessly and went straight for the Titan that had mercilessly killed his friend.
He sliced it's nape effortlessly, killing the beast and sending it plummeting to the ground, but in his haste to kill the Titan that had eaten Emile, he neglected to notice the second titan that stood directly behind the one he'd just killed.
The Titan grinned a sickening grin, and you could clearly see human remains stuck between its teeth from its last meal. Peter's screams reached new heights as the Titan bit down on his torso, spilling thick blood over the grass. I felt bile rise in my throat.
Both Emile and Peter were dead.
I looked around me, tears blurring my vision, my head pounding. My eyes darted around frantically, searching for Levi.
Please don't be dead.
I wanted to cry. I wanted to break down and curl up into a ball until all the bloodshed was over. I wanted to pinch myself and wake up from this nightmare. I wanted to go home.
Please don't leave me alone here.
And then I saw him, using his 3DMG to fly through the air. He dealt with the Titan that had just killed Peter and then landed on the grass next to me.
"Grace!" Levi gasped, out of breath. "Are you hurt?"
I shook my head.
"Good" he nodded. "We need to take care of these four"
I looked at the four huge titans that were closing in on Levi and I. Huge disgusting grins plastered on their disgusting faces.
"One 10 meter..." I mumbled.
"Grace?" Levi sounded worried.
A tear fell down the side of my face. "One 14 meter..."
"Grace!" Levi was shouting now.
"One 11 metre? No, 12"
And then all of a sudden, Levi's hands were on my face, cupping my cheeks, holding me firmly. He brought his face close to my own and looked straight into my eyes. I'd never been so close to him before. I could feel his breath on my skin.
"Shut the hell up, damn it!" Levi yelled. "It doesn't matter how big they are, we're going to kill them anyway and we're going to get out of here! Do you hear me?!"
I nodded through tears. Levi was right. I had a home to get back to, I wasn't going to die today. I switched my blades hastily and used a nearby fallen tree to boost myself into the air.
I killed one Titan, then two. When I looked over at Levi I saw that he'd dealt with one Titan, but was tangling with the second.
I went over to help.
Suddenly, the Titan swatted it's huge arm at Levi, but he dodged it, causing the Titan to hit the cord on Levi's 3DMG instead. This sent Levi tumbling to the ground and he landed with a brutal thud. He didn't get up.
"Levi!" I cried out.
I realised I had no time to go and check if he was alright, I needed to take care of the monster first before it ate us both.
The Titan swatted its arm at me like it did Levi, but I used it's hand to boost myself up onto its shoulders where I had a clear aim at the nape. I took my chance, slicing the flesh, and the Titan fell to the ground.
I landed on the grass next to Levi, who, to my relief, was awake.
He looked extremely pale. I scanned his body to see what was wrong when I noticed his left leg was saturated with blood.
"Shit Levi" I mumbled.
"This fucking kills" He cursed, his voice was weak.
I tore off his trouser leg to expose the wound and I saw that he had a brutally broken leg. The bone was protruding right through his flesh.
"Got any alcohol?" I asked Levi, who was getting paler by the second.
"Why would I have any-" he started.
"Levi!"
"Inside jacket pocket" he groaned.
I fumbled through his jacket until I found a small silver flask filled with liquid.
"What are you gonna do with tha-AAAGH" Levi yelled as I poured the alcohol into his wound.
"Sorry" I said bluntly.
"You're not sorry" Levi retorted, his voice hoarse and full of pain.
"You're right"
After the alcohol was gone and Levi had stopped swearing, I took off my Survey Corps jacket and tore it in half.
"What are you doing?" Levi asked, his voice getting weaker. "You'll freeze"
"If I don't do this" I replied as calmly as I could. "You'll die"
I wrapped a torn piece of my jacket around Levi's leg, he hissed as I did so but I carried on until I was sure the blood wouldn't come through for at least a few hours.
I looked into the sky, which had turned a mixture of soft pinks and burnt oranges. The sun was setting.
"It's gonna get dark soon, we've got to try and trace back to the formation" I mumbled before turning my attention to the injured boy on the ground. "Can you walk?"
"Yeah, probably. Just help me up" he grunted.
I slung Levi's arm over my shoulders and pulled him up, but as soon as he put any weight on his leg it buckled and he fell to the floor in agony. It was an ugly situation.
I looked over at the ruins of what used to be a house, just a few metres away from us.
"We're going to have to stay here for the night" I told Levi
"No, we can't" Levi groaned "If we stay here, the formation will think we're dead and they'll go back to wall Maria without us"
"Yeah, I know" I sighed "But I can't carry you for long, and we don't know where the formation is. They could be ten miles away"
"We can't-" Levi started, but I interrupted him.
"It's not your decision, moron. We're staying here tonight whether you like it or not"
"Fine" Levi spat. "If we die, it's on you"
"Whatever"
