Skylar's POV

I sat at the police station reception for what it seemed like ages. People were coming and going, unaware of my presence. I didn't blame them though. I probably looked like a tornado had passed through my hair. I looked at the time: 6:35 AM. I had been there for at least 8 hours.

¿Why did I spend the night in the most uncomfortable chair ever? My best friend disappeared. After the frightening call, I called a taxi and told him the address. I was so scared, Brooke sounded terrified and she hardly joked. When I arrived, she wasn't there. I panicked. Where was she? Was she alone? Was she alright? Those questions were still haunting me. Of course, the only thing that occurred to me was:

"Hey, I'll tell the police, they'll take care of it right away. That's what the Government always tells us, right?

   I was wrong.

8 hours passed since I came running and crying through the corridors telling every policeman I could find about my friend and her disappearance. Nobody seemed to care or were too busy to help. I didn't know what to do, my life had always been a peaceful and quiet one. I NEVER, not once, went to a police station. I never HAD to go before that day.

After one hour more, a man with a strange mustache and a suit walked towards me. He had a patient smile on his face and his green eyes were wide open.

-Hello darling, do you need any help?

   Finally someone that cared!

-Yes please, my best friend is missing. I received a phone call from her yesterday at 8 PM, she said that I should go to this address, so I went because she sounded terribly scared, but when I got there she wasn't there anymore...

-Hey, calm down, can you please show me a picture of her?

I could hardly breathe. Brooke was my best and only friend. She was my only family. She had been there for me when my parents died. We were inseparable, I couldn't loose her. I took my cellphone wishing I had a text message from Brooke saying that she was fine and eating my chocolate chip cookies. Nothing.

-She's the one with the black coat- I said while watching the photo we took at the Golden Gate, we used to go there to do photo sessions because it was super close.

-Oh, I think I have seen her somewhere, can you tell me her name, please?- The policeman asked.

  -Brooklyn Woods

My voice broke while saying her name, a tear threatened to come out.

"Not now Skylar, you've got to stay strong"

The man's eyes opened widely and he stared at me for one second in shock.

-Come to my office please, we will search for her by the barcode register.

"OF COURSE! Why didn't I think about that before? God, I'm seriously stupid."

Since the President was elected in 2035, he decided that IDs were overrated and that everyone in the US should get a barcode on our wrist with literally ALL your info. Also, under the barcode was your date of birth. So, the day you were born: POOF! Barcode. It kinda was one of the best idea the present Government had, which isn't saying much. But it also felt like you were someone's object or toy, and the president was our owner. Oh, wait. Did I mention that anyone who didn't have that barcode was killed? I think there were at least five policemen on every street checking every.single.day.
