Eternally

What happened?

You were chasing it, flying past the trees and leaving small marks on their bark from the long wires that held you up, that kept you moving.

You realized you had suddenly come to a halt, and you were being pulled backwards.

Now, you're falling.

Down, down into the abyss below.

It's all happening so slowly, it seems impossible, like a dream.

Someone as strong as you is falling into the darkness that is death.

You're still falling, and as you look to your right, you notice the abnormal, holding the ripped wire in its hand.

Death is inevitable.

But that doesn't mean I want to die.

At least, I want a chance to say goodbye.

Closing your eyes, you let the dark take over, a tear floating away from you as you descend.

Your eyes shoot open at the sound of someone yelling your name.

Oh, look. The corporal is reaching for your hand, a look of utter horror, shock and determination etched into his eyes.

Levi, I've never seen you make a face like that.

Stop it.

You'll get wrinkles.

As he reaches for your limp hands hopelessly, you give him a small smile.

"Sorry."

You open your eyes, to be met with a plain white ceiling.

Struggling, you sit up, looking at all the bandages on your body.

Removing the blanket, you set your feet down on the cool concrete floor, holding onto your wooden bed frame as you attempt to stand up.

Your legs fail to support your weight, and you tumble to the ground, unable to get up.

Your vision becomes blurred, and you close your eyes.

"Corporal, do you want coffee or tea?" You ask with a smile.

"Shouldn't someone like you be training with the new recruits instead of doing paperwork?"

"I suppose you're right. See you later," you reply, putting on your jacket and walking towards the door.

"Wait," he walks up to you and grabs your arm.

You look back at Levi. "What is it?"

"Our expedition is tomorrow. Do you really want to go?" He asks.

"What are you talking about? Of course I'm going- I'm one of our strongest soldiers, so I have to," you answer, confused. "Why?"

"I just don't want anything to happen to you," he mutters.

"Death is unavoidable, Levi. Besides, this expedition is important. I'll see you tomorrow," you smile, giving him a hug.

"If I ever lost you, I'd probably go insane," he whispers back.

The corporal wraps his arms around your waist tightly, inhaling your sweet scent. You pry yourself out of his arms, give him a wave and leave.

You open your eyes again, to be back on your sickbed, being cradled by someone else.

His face.

It's so familiar.
