Nadia’s POV

Athena, my best friend and I have been going to the same café for 4 years now. We go there so often, the barista already knows what we order.

“Atheee” I whine as we cross the street

“Naddiee” She mocks. “This whole hypnotist show sounds like a bad idea”

“C’mon, it’ll be fun” I whine again.

We enter the double doors of the café. It’s a popular little place and it serves the most amazing coffee. We walk up to the counter and we’re greeted by the main barista, Rosemarie Stevens.

“Large non-fat macchiato with a triple espresso shot for Athena and a large soy mocha-latte, no whip, with a single espresso shot for Nadia” Rosemarie says, handing us our drinks.

“Thanks” Athena and I say in unison

“You’re welcome, guys” She replies

We head over to ‘our’ table near the far left corner by the window. I lay my messenger bag down on the floor and pull out my biology book. We study, watch the cars go by and sip our coffee.

“Oh-mi-god, Athe, I’m going to fail this exam” I sigh

“Don’t be silly, Nadia” She says. “If anyone passes, it’ll be you for sure”

“I hope you’re right” I reply.

The place wasn’t that busy today, so Rosemarie came over to talk to us. We met Rosemarie in freshmen year and she was a senior then. Now, even before we came here she was working here. After all, her dad did own the place. She laid the bottle of cleaner another table and pulled up a chair.

“What’s up?” She asks

“Just studying bio” I reply. “Not much really”

“Biology was my WORST subject in high school” She chuckles

“We got an extra ticket to Erie’s Hypnotist Show, that’s if you want to go” Athena says.

“Really?” Rosemarie responds, looking around nervously and playing with the hem of her shirt.

“Yeah” Athena confirms, pulling the extra ticket out of her bag. “It’s on Friday, at 7, that’s if you go”

“I can make arrangements” She replies hastily. “It was nice talking to you guys, anyway there’s a customer”

“See you later, Rosemarie” I say.

There were only a couple of hours remaining until the show. I open my closet and pick out a pink flannel and white skinny jeans. I live on a farm, so I own more plaid than the average teenage girl. I apply a bit of mascara and brush my honey blonde hair into a side-braid, leaving a couple of wisps of hair to frame my face.

Rosemarie drove us there in her car. Athena had texted her to pick us up. The show is in the Corley Community Stadium. We get there quarter to 7. We head in the entrance of the stadium and hand the tickets to the ticket lady.

“Enjoy the show” She says joyfully.

“Thanks” We say in unison

Our seats are near the front, towards the stage. The stadium becomes congested with people. The show begins moments later.

“Welcome, ladies and gents, to Erie’s Hypnotist Show!” The man says, gesturing to the left side of the stage. “Here comes the one and only, Erie Winters”

The man then exits the stage and the spotlight moves to Erie.

“Hello, folks, I’ll be your hostess for the next couple of hours.” Erie explains. “I’ll be preforming a number of types of hypnotism. Without further ado, any volunteers?”

She scans the crowd for a worthy volunteer and she points her finger right on, none other, than me.

“C’mon, darling” She says, pulling out a chair to the middle of the stage. “Take a seat”

I drag my deadweight feet up the stair leading to the stage. I slowly sit down and examine the large sea of people. There’s so many people that I know from school here. Oh, shit. She pulled something from her blazer pocket. A silver stopwatch.

“Here, is an ordinary stopwatch” She goes on and I get distracted.

I glance and see that Rosemarie left. A wave of nervousness comes over.

“What’s your name, sweetheart?” Erie asks

“Nadia Roux” I hesitate

“Nadia, I will wave this stopwatch in front of you. It is no longer a stopwatch, but rather a pendulum. You will slowly close your eyes and fall into a deep trance” She says in a hypnotizing tone. “You’ll only hear my voice and my voice only. You are in a deep trance, a very deep trance. You’re in a meadow lying on the grass, smelling the meadow flowers and fresh grass. When I snap my fingers, you will awaken.”
