It's funny, how every single story in the history of everything. Ends the same way, no matter it be happily ever after, or The End. There's always that mystery behind the magic. it leaves you wondering, or creating your own 'happily ever after' but that's not the end I'm taking about, that unsure end, the sentence that ends with a comma; I'm talking about the end, the period of the sentence, the seal on the story pf life, death. Because sure, the story may continue beyond and past 'The End' but at the true end, theres nothing that can change, no 'continuation.' nothing, just.'
I pulled Maggie to the side of the maintenance hatch as bullets began to fly freely through it. i glanced at the map again, and pulled Maggie behind me, the race for time had begun, who can get there faster, us or them. we went along the narrow hallway, all the time, the voices of more and more forgetters
"Halt; I think they went this way; Stop; Stop right there; don't do that" we climbed many ladders, and exhaustion began to sink in, but i knew it would all be worth it once we got to the top, above, i visualized the beautiful city, an actual skyline. gorgeous. Just waiting for us. 'Above'
"no, no, no, no!" we had turned the wrong way, but we were close to the level where our home was.
"This way!" i picked up Maggie, and ran full force at a wooden door that lead us right to the streets, there were forgetters everywhere, and our home was gone due to the fires from the pub.
"shite" i ran through a crowd of people on part of the path.
"come here, quickly child." a women spoke softly. I ran over to here in my exhaustion.
"come in, hurry now." she pulled us into her home, and looked to see if anyone saw us.
"Thank you ma'am"
"Why are you running child?"
"I can't tell you, I'm sorry."
"Oh honey, i just saved you from those bastards, you really think you can't tell me?" i took a few more deep breathes, and smiled.
"We're trying to get to the surface. My parents said its a better life for us up there, a-"
"It is a better like" she said pouring a cup of tea.
"but i don't know about safer." she offered me the glass
"no thank you." she nodded, and set the glass back down.
"now, tell me." she paused looking slightly confused
"Have i done something.. to wrong you in the past minute that i've known you?"
"n-no ma'am I-"
"because you're acting very untrustworthy towards someone who just saved your damn life."
"I didn't mean to. I'm sorry." she nodded again
"now, tea?" she offered me the glass again, and this time i not so graciously accepted. we sat and spoke for a few minutes, and she gave Maggie water, and food at which she took with no questions.
"see?" the older women pointed to Maggie.
"trust! true, honest trust, that is something that they have taken away from you, and from me, and every other person in the 'Den' except... for the children, you see? we're born with trust, its our natural instinct, but they're put the poison in the soup and taken away the ability over time. But theres still hope. i believe in you, and in her." she adjusted herself.
"i wish that none of this had ever happened. Our parents were killed, and I didn't even know about this whole 'secret life' until about a month ago, i with i could just go back. Back to My normal" i said out of no where. she shook her head.
"Now, i'll give you a choice, because at this point you look like you need one." she chuckled a little and leaned in slightly.
"You can either stay here with me, and live safely and happily, your life would be back to 'normal,' i promise you. Or. you can go up there, and find the cure to the poison, show everyone who you are, be the hero of the story. Which every way you choose to go, is your choice, and your choice alone. But are you the hero to the story? or the person that's on the side." she pushed her back back into her seat, and waited for my response.
"I have to finish what my parents started."
"Then there you go! just promise me one thing, when you go and fix this hell hole, come back and say hi to me." i stood and thanked her for her hospitality, took Maggie by the hand, and went back out int the street, i unfolded the small map that was still in my pocket, and pulled up my hood. We walked back to the maintenance tunnel and went in. there were forgetters waiting near the entrance,
"halt!" they screamed as we passed them
I picked Maggie up again, and raced with her to the ladder, i pushed her up ahead of me, and we climbed the ladder, it was so long, but we kept climbing, i felt my chest get lighter, and in the far dark distance i could see a large hatch that lead to the surface, there were forgetters right on our ass. '24; 23; 22; 21; 20' the levels began to pass slower and slower as i started to not be able to feel my legs began to feel like they were gone. i kept pushing Maggie, and myself '8; 7; 6; 5; 4; 3; 2;' I struggled to get my arm above my head, but managed to pulling on the lever that was between us and freedom. it finally popped open, and a stream of white nothingness fled into our eyes, it was so bright, but i pushed maggie out, and me closing the hatch and locking it behind us." my vision began to adjust and around was a circle of men in militant outfits. there wasn't city though. just green, beautiful green hills, and the sky, i began to laugh, i wanted to cry, it was so beautiful. but i couldn't, so i laughed.
"Put your hands up!" one of the men screamed, i put my hands up, but i couldn't stop smiling, and laughing the air, the beauty the... i bullet pierced my chest, and i felt cold. my head hit the ground and i looked up straight at the sky. the sky,the never ending possibilities, tears began to flow from my eyes, I never thought
