The wet feeling of blood trickling down Jacob's forehead awoke him from unconsciousness. The gritty dirt in his mouth triggered his gag reflex, and he couldn't stop the involuntary reaction of his body dry heaving. His head throbbed, and he was sure there was a bump there now from hitting his head on the carriage as it toppled over.
The horses had been thrown in a frenzy by the explosion and the reins had slipped out of Jacob's grasp, tangling dangerously in their hooves. One of them tripped, bringing the other down with them, along with the carriage.
Mercy. I have to get to Mercy.
Jacob dragged himself out from under the carriage, and immediately leapt onto the upright side. He flung open the door, expecting to find Mercy bruised and battered.
But he found something much more alarming.
Mercy was gone.

"What was that?!" Ava asked in almost annoyance, as she picked herself up from the floor. She was enjoying a nice chat with Evie, the two of them discussing what their first impression of the bustling London was when a large explosion sounded, shaking the train car and throwing both of them to the floor.
"In all honesty, I wouldn't be surprised if Jacob had something to do with it," Evie grumbled in response, shaking off her coat. "But it sounds like it came from the ports. Oh god, I have to make sure Henry is alright!"
Before she could rush off, however, her fiancé burst into the train car. "Evie!" Henry shouted, his brows crinkled in worry. "Are you alright?"
She nodded in reply. "We have to get to the ports. That's where the explosion sounded. I just hope Jacob isn't wrapped up in this."

How could she be gone? How long have I been out?
A million thoughts scrambled Jacob's brain. He pinched the bridge of his nose, trying to collect himself.
Judging by the still setting sun, it probably hasn't been that long since he got knocked out. That means Mercy couldn't have gotten far. Perhaps she was abducted. That meant he had to check every nearby alley, in case her abductors took her there.
He set off, but before he could make it even two steps, a sharp pain in his lower calf made him wince and he stopped to examine it.
A large splinter of wood that he hadn't noticed before was lodged in the meaty area of his calf, above his ankle. The adrenaline running through his blood and the panic of trying to find Mercy caused him to overlook the piece of wood poking out of his flesh. Clenching his jaw, he knelt and took a knife to cut away the pant leg to expose the wound.
For Mercy.
In one swift move, he yanked the wood shard out of his calf and groaned as he tried to stifle the pain. He inhaled and stood up, ignoring the complaint from his calf.
"Mercy couldn't have gotten far. If she's hurt, I'll just kill the bloke who hurt her. Piece of cake," he grumbled to himself as he walked along, the knife still clutched in his hand.
The darkening sky worried him, however. "The sky shouldn't be getting this dark this fast..." he muttered, stopping in his tracks to observe the clouds above him.
But there were no clouds. Just a dark, gray haze looming over him. "What the devil is thi- oh shite." His head turned to the left, where the haze was a darker color, and he realized why the clouds weren't visible. Large plumes of smoke were billowing out from the direction of the ports, where a large blaze roared heartily on, like a monster gobbling its prey.
"God dammit!" Jacob roared at the fire, as if all his rage could put it out and return the evening to its peaceful state. What should he do? Find Mercy, or help out at the ports? No doubt about it, it was probably chaos there at the moment.
But an image of fair-colored hair and cerulean blue eyes flashed in front of his him, and the rage inside him softened a bit. She never failed to brighten his day, and every presence of her put a smile on his face, even if it was just a note she had delivered to him.
He knew what he had to do.

Hey guys! Short chapter I know, it was under 1000 words. I'm so sorry for the long hiatuses but I just nitpick everything I write before I publish it. It also doesn't help that sometimes I just don't feel inspired to write. Anyways, thanks for all the support as usual!! 💙
