A second later of admiring the golden city, the gatherers ran to claim a house. To claim a building. To claim gold, that was supposedly, suddenly, now theirs. No one thought of anyone else but themselves. All the gatherers wanted, was gold. Gold was all that filled their minds.
Their once feeling of curiosity was long gone, in place was an all-consuming greed and a dark green monster of envy. Greed to have more and more and more, and envy of what they didn't have, of what they "wanted" and of others.
Their greed and envy, made everyone turn on each other. Families broke. Mothers abandoned children. Fathers left everyone. The young turned aggressive. It was pure chaos. Their greed and envy, not only broke relationships but also helped commit the worst.
The killings. It started as mothers and fathers killing their own. The father killing the mother. The young killing the old. Until it was an all out massacre. Everyone killing for gold. Their greed and envy for gold, for no one else but them to have gold, over took. This madness was what ended the gatherers.
And once they were all gone, their was an eerie silence. For since the gatherers had appeared there was always sound. A chatter here and there. But now, there was none at all.
