Zane sat on the steps of his school. He was concerned. Dad is never late, he thought. "I bet he's fine," said his friend Ryan, who was sitting next to him. "I bet he's just stuck in traffic." Zane smiled and felt relieved. "Yeah, you're probably right." Right when he looked at Ryan, he noticed a little old man with a walker in the intersection nearby. The light was going to turn green in 20 seconds, and the old man wasn't even halfway to the other side of the road. He stood up and ran to the man. He put one hand on the man's shoulder and another on his walker, startling the old man. "Sorry to startle you," Zane said. "Do you want help crossing the road?" The old man looked up at Zane and smiled. "Certainly, young man," he said. Zane helped him across the street with 10 seconds to spare. The old man took a 20$ bill out of his pocket and held it out to Zane. He said, "To you, for your troubles." Zane smiled at the man and said, "No thanks. I wouldn't even know what to do with it." The man put the 20$ bill back in his pocket and pulled out two butter-scotch candies. He held them out to Zane and said, "At least take these." Zane smiled and took them. "Thank you sir. Have a great day!" "You too!" said the old man. Zane popped a candy in his mouth, turned around, and waited for the light to change. Making sure Zane wasn't looking, the old man ran into a nearby alley. He threw the walker into a dumpster, scaring a cat. He took a pad out of his pocket. He had one name on it. He wrote down another. The names he had were Cassandra and Zane.
Zane's dad came five minutes later and picked him and Ryan up. Since they lived in the same building, they often carpooled. Zane said to his father, "Can Ryan and I go get pizza around 6 tonight?" His dad responded, "But I was going to make dinner tonight!" Zane had an idea. "We'll get you buffalo wings!" His dad thought for a second. He looked at Zane and said, "You make a convincing offer. Pay with your own money for once and you've got yourself a deal!" Zane nodded. "Yes, of course!" He said. He and Ryan high-fived. Little did they know what would happen when they got their pizza.
