Cassie was busy pleading with her mother. "Why can't I go get sushi with my friends?" Her mother had used the same excuse for the past 6 years. "Don't you have a project to do?" Cassie almost laughed. "It's the last week of school, mom. Teachers can't assign projects anymore." Her mom groaned. "Fine. But you're paying with your own money and you BETTER be home by 8' o'clock sharp. Not 8:01. Not 8:05. 8." Cassie smiled. "Of course, mom. Thank you."
At exactly 5:00, Leah was at Cassie's door. "Ready to go?" She said, smiling. "8. SHARP," Cassie's mom yelled. "Of course, mom," she replied. She then left and walked to a popular sushi restaurant. Two hours later, Cassie and Leah left for home. Cassie had noticed that it was only 7:00, but it was dark out already. "You still have an hour until you have to be home," Leah said. "Wanna go get ice cream?" Cassie smiled and said, "Sure!". At that moment Zane and Ryan were coming around the corner in front of them. Leah said to Cassie, "Hey, they go to our school! Let's see if they know us!" As soon as they were about five feet in front of the boys, a round, blue portal opened in front of them on the sidewalk. All four people looked down at the portal, and then looked at the two people across the portal. Ryan was freaking out. "Did you two make this... this.... THING?" He asked the girls. At that moment, a red, blue, and black blur shot out of the portal as it started to close. The blur shot up about 20 feet in the sky and then landed in a small ball. The ball unrolled into a humanoid shape and then the armored form stood up. He was about 6 feet tall. From under the mask, he said, "Hello, children." Cassie was the first to speak. "Who-who are you?" she stammered. "Someone you'll recognize," he said. He tapped the side of the helmet twice. It disappeared, and Cassie gasped.
The same kind eyes. The same brown hair. The same short beard. It was the man she helped up off the street earlier that day.
