Renee

1,810 years later......

The bright sun shone as Renee glanced at Mother, frantically trying to look at something besides the tall plants that curled beneath the cable car. Mother smiled reassuringly, and looked down at the arch of Renee's new school in quiet disapproval. The huge concrete dome grew closer as she hopped out of the tin cable car, and waved goodbye to Mother. " I hope I don't embarrass myself ."

Renee shuddered involuntarily at the word. "This is a new province," she stared at the cable car, fading in the distance, " of course you'll do fine."

A cool breeze blew across the school yard as she followed the quaint marble path leading to the entrance of 'Junior High'. Renee paused.  Before walking through the glass doors, she tried to straighten her shoulders, imagining what Mother would do before going off to her new service. She took a deep breath, and walked through the glass, hearing the space make a small 'shmoo' behind her.

The rows of perfectly aligned lockers, manipulating themselves in each row, were the first unnerving sight.  Renee shuddered and followed the arrows pointing to the head room rhythmically, until suddenly, her telemuner buzzed. Renee inhaled sharply, the sound semmed to loud in the ghost silent hallway. As if the buzz were an signal, the head room's door swung open revealing a very shiny lady. She stood in the doorway smiling, " Welcome to 'Junior High' Renee, student number 659, and level primitive. We've been expecting you to arrive on time." The Lady gestured Renee through the doorway and toward the welcoming hall, Renee exhaled.  "Thank you" she stated as the glass closed behind them.

The Lady led Renee through a twist of halls, all elegantly curved at the right angles, as Renee mused, and into a ballroom for 'replenishing moments'. Renee looked up at the Lady questionably, " Lunch," the Lady winked and gracefully walked out before the glass closed. Renee froze hearing the Lady's footsteps vanish back to the head room. She took a deep breath and stared at the large foyers, open windows, and shiny park tables. " For a such a small school you'd think their lunch room would be tiny," Renee thought as she walked toward an empty table.

" Bonjour new girl!" a voice called from behind her, scattering her thoughts. Renee turned to see a girl in a pink beret bounce toward her.

 " Hi," she stammered.

" Bonjour nouvelle filli!" The girl giggled. " Come sit with moi and my fellow Prims over there!"  she pointed toward a long circular table strategically placed directly under the sunlight. " My name's Jenn by the way" the girl huffed as she pulled, then plopped, Renee next to a petite girl with wavy light brown hair. Renee goggled at their similarities, in fact everyone sitting the table had the same perfected features.

" No wonder Jenn helped 'the new girl'," Renee thought miserably, " I look like a specimen." She looked around the large room staring at every girls face, they were all stunning and glowing like jewels, just like the Ladies had. Renee was still capturing their porcelain faces that had suddenly become eerily identical, when she felt a soft tap on her shoulder. Looking up she saw but another twinned flawless face. A girls impatient emerald eyes glinted with poison, as she held her lunch out toward Renee spot on the bench.

" You need to move," the petite girl whispered, " that's Bianca's seat.."

Renee stood quickly, " I'm sorry, I'll move."

She hurried to leave, but Jenn pushed her back down. " No stay! We all want to meet the new girl in a la mode garb!" She smiled, " it's not every day we get a new prim at 'Primming'!"

"Primming?" Renee asked unsure.

"Primming," Jenn repeated cheerfully. " Oh and of course, I forgot to introduce you to everyone. We will go in order, I'm first of course. "Bonjour, my name is Jenn." She promptly sat down and faced Bianca.

Bianca sighed, but stood slowly brushing her cascade of bronze hair to the side.

" Bianca, leader of this group. So don't get any ideas!" She hissed and pointedly stared at a girl in all green across from her.

Renee gulped as Maddie stood up. " Wait," she cried over Maddie's modulated voice. "What's Primming?" The girls continued to ignore her pitiful cries and went around the small circle until the petite girl next to Renee slowly stood.

She took the point to look directly at Renee as none of the other girls had. " My name is Abigal, and the 'Primming' is what we, at the level of primitive, call this school." She pointed up to the ceiling where a banner held the school's flag, and sat, nudging Renee to stand. Renee blinked and stood, a bit unbalanced, much to Bianca's pleasure, then began.

" My name is Renee Dovey." Then she hastily sat down and surveyed the girls faces. Jenn's  smile quickly turned into a pout, as she moved the corners of her mouth delicately.

" Come on Renee, tell us a little bit more about yourself." She looked around the table for encouragement and every girl nodded.

" Well, I was homeschooled before I came to this province..."

Jenn's face became dumbstruck midway.  "What's homeschool?" Bianca asked pronouncing the word carefully.

Renee blinked furiously, baffled. " It's where you learn the curriculums that you learn at school, but at home. Mother was my teacher."

" Oh," Jenn added brightly, " we have curriculums here at 'Primming' also! We learn things about mask history and-" she paused. " Don't we Abby?" Abigal nodded staring down at her nails that were rosy and painted with a clear sheen of polish. Renee noticed, that the longer she stared, the plainer Abigals nails became.

She rubbed her eyes, " Am I hallucinating now?" Renee thought bewildered.

Bianca pushed her worry aside, as well as poor Abigal's books.

" Tell me more about this," she paused distastefully, "homeschool."

"Well," Renee paused in thought, " homeschool was always enjoyable because Mother would always take me to different areas for my amusement outside of my province, then we would do homework and-"

Bianca interrupted and laughed, " Homework? What's that? Are you just manipulating words in your mind now?" she scoffed, causing Jenn to ask, " what's home?"

Renee stared wide eyed at laughing Bianca, and curious Jenn. She studied the girls eager faces, " how do they not know what 'home' is?" Renee asked herself. " Wait of course, I'm in a new province, they probably call work and home a different name here." She smiled carefully, " home is where I go after school."

The girls sighed heavily in unison. " Oh you mean your pad!" Jenn remarked relieved. " We all have one, the directions say to report back to your pad directly after school."

Renee gaped at her, "never mind" she said. Jenn just shrugged and turned to Abigal and Bianca then began to talk about the new blossoms that had been planted for selection.

" It would make the perfect dress color, " she mused. " I'm going to send a request to the dressmaker today."

"Of course it would" Bianca shrugged and faked a sigh."But I heard the dressmaker malfunctioned!"

Jenn gasped and soon, all the girls joined into the gossip, even Abigal, and that left Renee sneak away. The empty table never felt so full as she sat on the cool stone and focused on staring at all the faces around the room. Renee noticed the longer she stared, the blurrier and hazier they became, until a sheen of light peeked through and their faces grew opaque and shimmered.

Renee gasped, losing her focus, and all the faces returned to the breathtakingly beautiful state they were in before.
