Nasir Jones

Nicki looked at the name as it flashed across the projection screen. Her eyes scanned his picture as her boss talked. He read off a list of things that Nasir has accused of, but as far as she knew, he's never been caught.

They've been searching for years. Not once has he been put in jail for any of it. All she heard was stories of how smart this guy was. He knew the streets like the back of his hand. He was always 10 steps ahead and it showed.

It's funny because with her just joining the force, this is the first "exciting" case she's come across.

"We need to get crime off the streets on New York." Nigel, the boss, announced.
"It starts here. We'll need a good team if we're going to take down one of the biggest drug lords in the area."

The projection screen turned off and the lights came on. The room became filled with conversation. Nicki, on the other hand, was in deep thought. She looked over at Nigel, wanted to take a huge risk by asking him this but it never hurts to try.

Nicki approached him, she cleared her throat, catching his attention immediately.

"Maraj... did you enjoy the presentation?" Nigel asked, sipping from his freshly brewed coffee.

"I did. I did. It was very interesting." Nicki began.

"That's great. It shows you what kind pf people we have out here corrupting our streets." Nigel finished.

"Mhm..just one question though."

"... and what's that?" Nigel asked, giving Onika his full attention.

"I want in." .."I want in on this case." Nicki blurted, receiving a blank stare from her boss.

"Are you joking?" Nigel asked, taken aback.

"...no. I'm very serious." Nicki replied, feeling a bit embarrassed and discouraged.

Nigel cleared his throat, "No offense, but I don't think-"

"Look, this is the right case for me. I bet you I can handle this better than any one else in this room could. I grew up in these streets. I know exactly where men like Nasir roam and hide out."

Nigel sighed, "This is a very dangerous job. You're literally a rookie on the force. No way in hell would this just be a walk in the park. There's a high chance of you getting killed out there. You will no longer be here, in a safe zone. You'll be roaming onto another territory."

"That's a risk I'm willing to take."
Nicki shot back.

"I don't know.." Nigel looked down at her unsure of his next decision.
"Maraj, I'm not sure if-"

"If I fuck this up, I give you my permission to let me go. But I know for sure that, that won't happen because I'm going to bring Nasir in, alone."
Nicki spoke confidently.

"No way, not alone. You're taking a partner with you."

Nicki began to say something else but hearing what Nigel just said, shot that out the window. A smile crept up on her face, "So was that a yes?"

Nigel shook his head, "You're killing me. It's a yes. You've convinced me."

Nicki's pearly whites made a grand entrance as she danced around on the inside, but on the outside nothing but a smile was seen.

"BUT, you have to take a partner or it's not happening."

Nicki sighed, "It's not like I'll need one but okay, who?"

"Angela!" Nigel yelled, getting the attention of the long haired mixed girl who, was for the most part, the quietest in the room. But since Nigel picked her, she must have experience, Nicki thought.

"You and Onika are on the Nasir Jones case! The deadline is in a month! Let's get this guy off our streets."
