Chapter Eight

Two Hearts

I peeked around the corner to stare at the girl sitting in our living room, bleeding all over the carpet.

That was going to be something to try and explain to the maid.

I looked back at Nate as he crossed his arms and stared me down. "We need to tie her up. It’s not safe." He said, jerking his head over to the living room.

I honestly didn't know what to do with the girl. Her body was decaying from all the damage and she was going to have to leave and find a new one soon. I can guarantee you that I was not going to be on that journey though. Don’t know about anyone else, but I kind of prefer not knowing how shape shifters take new forms. All I do know, is that they have to kill someone to do it.

And I would like to keep it that way.

“We can’t just yet.” I told him and he narrowed his eyes, as if asking and why the hell not? “If we tie her up, she’ll decay right on the spot. We need to get her a new body, and then tie her up. And by we, I mean you.” He closed his eyes and pinched the bridge of his nose. I looked back at the girl and saw she was slouched over, and that around the open wounds on her arm, the skin was starting to peel up. I curled my lip and looked back at Nate, to see his eyes were open.

“Fine.” He snapped, and shoved past me, out into the living room. The girl slowly lifted her head as Nate approached her and she smiled.

“You’re letting me go get a new body.” She breathed and Nate nodded his head.

“We need to make it quick. Whoever was chasing you could still be lurking around.” She nodded and tried to get up, but started to fall before Nate caught her around her waist. She winced in pain and he mumbled a sorry.

“Hurry back guys. And be safe.” I warned. Nate rolled his eyes and as they left, I didn’t miss the pained expression on the woman’s face. And it defiantly wasn’t because of the wounds on her. I knew that look, because I had the same one whenever my dad would expect me to do something I didn’t want to. If I had to guess, I would say she didn’t want to change bodies.

I’ll ask once they get back.

I sighed out loud as I looked around, laughing at the noise my lips made. I had no clue what to do while they were gone. The red stains on the carpet caught my eye and I shrugged. Cleaning those up would be helpful. The maid would have a heart attack if she saw them. I hurried to the kitchen, hoping I would find something useful in the cabinets, but alas, there was nothing.

So I moved to the bathroom.

I let out a holler of success when I found a bottle of Clorox. It was marked for bathroom use, and only had a small amount in it, but I would take anything at this point.

I hurried back to the kitchen, snatching some paper towels, before sliding down next to the stains.

“Hello there blood stain. My names Nikolai, and I’m here to make love to you.” I said in what I thought was a seductive Spanish accent. “Okay, I kid. I’m really going to kill you—Wait. Why am I talking to stains?” I squinted my eyes and shook my head. I needed to get out more that was for sure. I returned my focus to the carpet and sprayed each spot with the cleaner and took to scrubbing it with the napkins. By the time I finished, the stains were almost invisible, but there was now little torn pieces of paper towels all over the floor. I groaned in frustration and started to pick them up when I heard a knock on the door.
