The next day, I was coming home from school, driving past the county jail. I recognized the Triplets; Herasu, Sai Riyo, and Risaikuru; walking by the jail. I hadn't seen them come this way before.
As I was walking in through the door to my house, I heard the news playing. It was always on, so I didn't pay much attention to it. But when I heard that "there has just been a death at the Kern County Jail", I stopped concentrating on my homework, and focused on the anchorman.
"In cell 713, the woman in residence was found lying dead with a variety of torture marks on her body," the television blazed. "No fingerprints were found, and the security cameras apparently disabled at the time, but officials say not to panic. All other cells were left untouched, however, the criminals residing in neighboring cells claim not to have seen anything except three shadows."
The first thing that crossed my mind was the Triplets. But then, I figured that they probably were just there to ensure their mom was okay. I started to feel guilty. Just because they were jerks to everyone at school, didn't mean they would kill anyone.
My thoughts started to drift to my conversation with Chris. I knew it was stupid, as we had only met over the phone, but I was starting to develop a crush on her. I didn't even know what she looked like for heaven's sake! But she was so sweet, I couldn't help but feel something for her.
"Delsin!" My mom called out, interrupting my thoughts, "Are you going to help me with dinner, or rot your previously brilliant brain staring at the TV?" I wanted to reply with a witty remark, but I came up empty. Besides, it wasn't like there was much left to think about. I had been considering calling Chris again, but I always chickened out.
"Coming," I finally replied, walking into the kitchen. "What are we making?"
"I put some chicken nuggets in the oven, and you're going to heat up some leftover lasagna."
I rolled my eyes. "Freezer burned chicken nuggets and leftover lasagna... Yum."
"Don't sass me young man, or you can make dinner yourself," Mom scolded.
"Maybe I will," I mumbled. "Anything's better than this."
"What did you say?"
"Nothing."
After that wonderful combination of ew and bleck, I went up to my room to debate whether or not I would call Chris. I had just sat down, when I got a message from Nar-nar.
Did you hear about the lady at the jail?
The dead one? Ya
Super weird right?
Definitely
They just released info on who she was
So who?
The Triplets' mom
Srsly? I saw them walking by the jail on the way home
No way
Yup
That's way weird
I sat there staring at the wall for a while. I finally picked up my phone, and texted Nar-nar, Do you think I should call Chris?
IDK man, you've been kinda obsessed
I had been asking him that a lot. I didn't really know how to respond, but eventually I did.
I just don't wanna sound desperate, ya know? I like her
Figured.
What?
Nutin'
K. GTG
Bye
I looked through my contacts until I got to the name I was looking for. I sat in anticipation as the phone rang. Four rings later, I finally released the breath I was holding.
Hello? Said the sweet accent I had been thinking of since the moment after the first call.
