I had just shut my locker door, when Delsin, the kid from math class, came up to me.
"Hey," he said.
"Um, hi. What's up?"
"The sky," he said with a wink.
I smiled and rolled my eyes. I felt oddly comfortable around him.
"Anyway," he said, "I heard you were from Tennessee. You don't happen to know any girls named Chris, do you?"
"Um, well sometimes I go by Chris, but that's normally when I don't really know someone." I contemplated talking further. "I once got a call from a guy around here... his name was Peter Johnson. But you probably don't know him."
He gave a nervous laugh. "About that..."
"What?"
"Well, I sort of-" He was interrupted by the tardy bell.
"Golly gee! I'm late for class! I've gotta go, I'll see ya 'round. I still want answers," I giggled. I flashed a smile and winked. As I turned around, I saw Delsin flush red.
As I walked into class, the teacher glared at me.
"I'm so sorry, it's a big school and I got lost in the halls," I apologized.
"All right," the teacher responded, "just this once. Since you're new."
When I sat down, I wasn't paying any attention to the teacher. I kept thinking about Delsin, and what he said in the hall. He seemed embarrassed, yet relieved. And the odd thing was, he knew a girl named Chris from Tennessee. How ironic was that? I slowly drifted back to reality. By then, the teacher had set us to work. I leaned over to the girl next to me and asked what we were supposed to be doing.
"Maybe," she hissed, "you should've been paying attention."
I thought I remembered her name being Herasu. She was always glaring at someone or scolding her siblings. I was pretty sure they were triplets, but I didn't know for sure.
"Sorry," I whispered weakly. I meant for it to come out stronger, but my voice betrayed me. I looked at the other people around me to see what they were doing, and ended up opening my science textbook to page 394. The first sentence said: "How much wood could a woodchuck could chuck wood?"
I sighed into my hand. "I feel like I missed something."
After one long and grueling hour, the class was over. I had almost forgotten my conversation with Delsin until I walked up the my locker, and it felt like I had talked to him just a minute ago. My thoughts kept coming back to how off-guard he seemed when I mentioned Peter Johnson. Maybe they knew each other and had an awkward relationship? I kept thinking about these things as I walked to my next class.
I stepped in the room, and sat next to Delsin. Class was going along fairly smoothly, with Delsin making side comments every once in a while. Finally, I couldn't stand it.
"Where have I met you before???"
"I think that I would remember if I met someone with an accent as pretty as yours," he replied smoothly, but still blushing.
That's it, I thought. I realized who Peter Johnson was.
