*the mystery boy*

Millies pov

I hesitantly replied to the boy,

"Yes it's my phone... thank you."

As my voice trailed off,  I slowly took my phone from his hands. I could feel his eyes glued to mine.

The world around us is quiet; the only sounds I could hear was our slow, exasperated breaths.

I look down at my phone. Once again the screen blazes in my face, blinding my eyes. I squinted and slowly looked up at the mystery boy.

The light from my phone is shining on my face, and now his.

I can see all the features of his face now, and he can see mine. Facing me were brown, almond-shaped eyes,  a prominent nose, and earth yellow skin.  His facial expression is kind and warm. I couldn't help but smile.

I shine the light farther up, revealing his sleek and straight light brown hair, gelled to the right side of his face.

We stared at each other in silence, studying each other.

Then, my phone dimmed and we were in complete darkness once more.

I knew I would have to keep going and I had already wasted time staring at the mystery boy.

As I start to walk away, he calls out to me in a quiet and soft tone of voice, "Wait..." he said breaking the silence.

I turn around, seeing the silhouette of the mystery boy. He began to speak again, louder this time,

"Let me introduce myself."

I could tell that he had a distinctive British accent, similar to mine. We exchange a smile, and I can see the outline of his smile in the darkness.

He walks towards me, facing me now. I felt the heat coming from his breathing, our bodies almost touching. I could tell he was thinking about what he was going to say.

He begins to speak again,

"My name is Romeo, short for Romeo Beckham."

Then, he waited for me to introduce myself.

I could feel the awkward tension between us, but I knew I had to introduce myself.

"Oh um... I'm, well...  my name is... Millie," I stuttered out.

I looked at him and saw him smile slightly.

"I really appreciate talking to you, but I have to go. I'm... late... for something." I said, clutching my duffle bag.

I walked away once more, but Romeo grabbed my arm, making me feel uncomfortable. I didn't like when people touched me, especially because of the past. I let Romeo pull me back and I whisper to myself quietly,

"How can I get away from this damn boy?" I sighed.

Romeo could tell that I was a bit uncomfortable by his gesture, so he let go of my arm and said bluntly,

"Sorry Millie, it's habit of mine, grabbing girls and all." He chuckled.

Geez, that's such a bitchy thing to say to a girl, I thought. I look at him with total disgust, luckily he can't see the expression on my face. I began to talk in a loud voice - anger and disgust coloring my words.

"Oh, so this isn't the first time you've grabbed a girl that way."

I'm shocked at my response, I've never stood up to anyone before. Especially a stranger like Romeo Beckham.

Romeo didn't expect me to say something about his comment.  He scratched the back of his head in embarrassment and nervousness.

"I'm sorry. I didn't mean for it to come out that way. I was just... making a... joke." He replied, trying to play it off.

Our conversation gets more unpleasant by the minute and it doesn't help that a strong wind had picked up as it neared 4 AM.

I held onto myself closely as the wind brushed against my bare arms, goosebumps forming all over my skin. Romeo looked at me as I shivered.  I didn't want to be around him any longer.  I have to keep going.

Finally, I walk away without saying goodbye, rubbing my arms as I walk along the dirty road. I was sure I was heading north, towards her house.

"Hey! Wait up! Are you sure you want to be out here all alone? Why are you even out here? Come on, you should stay at my house, it's just up the road." Romeo said, trying to convince me to stay with him. I turn, hoping that this would be the last time I had to.

"I'll be fine. My sister's house isn't far from here. And honestly, I could ask you the same question. Why are you out here?" I asked with sass, making it obvious how irritated I was by him.

Again, we stood face to face.

"Why am I out here? Don't even get me started, my parents were being obnoxious. They kept telling me to play with my little sister, but honestly I have better things to do than to sit around with a baby all day. We got into an argument and they kicked me out of the house for the night, but I know they'll let me come back. My parents are such pushovers." He scoffed.

There was a deafening silence between us, awkwardness growing. This boy has no idea what it's like to have parents who are toxic inside and out.

I turn around now, my back facing Romeo. I look out into the distance, fixated at the dusty-black and endless road. I begin walking away, clutching my duffle bag once more and trying to cover my bare arms from the wind.

I am going for good this time.

Not daring to look back at the boy I just encountered.
