ba-dum... ba-dum... ba-dum... ba-dum..
Is the only sound I hear as fear began to fill every inch of my body...
I shiver as I felt a cold chill run down my spine.
My heart is racing.
I am far from where I started but, I can still feel my parent's eyes on me. As they are able to see every move I make. If they are looking at me...
Would they be disappointed in me?
Would they even care?
But, who cares about me, right?
I realize that my mind is trailing off. I have to stay focused on why I'm out here, on why i'm running away from home.
"I have to escape," I said to myself, but I repeated the phrase louder as I realized I am in the middle of nowhere.
I stop running. I am out of breath. I am gasping for air.
ba-dum... ba-dum... ba-dum...
I can still hear my heart racing, but even faster this time.
I grab my phone from my duffle bag and I check the time. The screen blazed in the pitch black darkness. My phone screen blinded me. I squinted to see the numbers:
3:21 A.M.
And I put my phone back in my pocket. I can hear the click as I press the power button.
I'm in shock. I've been running since 11:00 p.m. without stopping. But only taking short breaks to regain my energy. I didn't know that I would be capable of taking on the world. All by myself.
I looked down at my converse, now dusty and rugged, covered in the black dust from the roads far behind.
I check my surroundings... pitch black. I reach for my phone, so I can use it as a flashlight.
Shit.
It isn't in my pocket. I become frantic, thinking someone had taken it.
I search for my phone. Maybe it's on the ground?
I get on my hands and knees. I can now feel the rough road, gravel piercing into the palms of my hands and my worn-out jeans.
I stop.
Is that breathing I hear? Is it my breathing? Or someone else's?
I continue to search for my phone more quickly this time. I am shaking, terrified about what is going to happen.
I can no longer hold myself up with my hands and arms. My arms are weak. My hands hurt from the rocks.
I... am.... tired...
I give a desperate reach for my phone, for one last time. Just hoping I would be grasping my phone. The only thing that gives me hope in my life. My phone.
As my arm stretched, my hand landed on something.
"My phone!" I scream, "I found it!"
I began to pull my phone back to me, but as i pulled...
It didn't move.
Instead, a hard thump followed.
I quickly stood up, finding myself face to face, looking into someone's eyes.
It is the only light in the pitch black darkness. The shining brown eyes, of this stranger.
He begins to speak silently, "Is this your phone?"
Then he holds up my phone.
