A word that many people dread hearing is sacrifice. No one, including myself, likes to give up things that they like to do or have. However, in order to move forward in life, sometimes you have to see the bigger picture rather than focusing on the sacrifice in the present. Think about how the sacrifice will benefit your progress in the long term. Finding positive justifications for the things you have to sacrifice in order to reach your goals makes you feel better about the sacrifice being made. You're reminding yourself that you desire much more than what you may have to give up for the short term.

My social life after the age of 16 became pretty much non-existent. Once I had gone on to college to study A-level US history, sociology, English and psychology, and wanted to get the best grades that I could, I found no time to have an active social life. And after a while I got used to a routine that revolved around work. I started to believe that I didn't need a social life. The friends that I had made in college weren't all that friendly in the long run, and that further reinforced my belief that maybe I was better off focusing all my attention on where I wanted to be. I was quite content travelling to Richmond Upon Thames, doing what I needed to do at college, and going home to do more work. The people around me began to see my obsession with work and progression as unhealthy. They didn't understand that I was happy to sacrifice a social life that would most likely comprise partying and spending money that could be invested into an area that would bring me closer to my dreams.
