Chapter Eight
“Just keep breathing in and out okay sweetie, take deep breaths!” I said to a little girl no older then five as I placed the oxygen mask over her head.
The poor child was having her first asthma attack I presumed but I was now waiting for the doctor to come and make my suspicions clear.
“This is Tilly Martin age four; she displayed symptoms of wheezing and coughing…” I stated signing some paperwork as Ezra stood at the foot of the bed. “Okay till I’m just going to remove the mask and I’m going to use my stethoscope to listen to your lungs, I’ll need you to take deep breaths for me okay?” The way he spoke and cared for the little girl was beautiful; he’d have made a great Dad I thought standing back a little waiting for him to finish up. “Your daughter has asthma, we are going to start her on nebulisers for now and after that you can take her him and organise a visit to your local general practitioner!” He spoke to the little Girl’s Mother simply with conviction. “Administer one dose of two point five milligrams of ventolin, if you feel her breathing hasn’t improve page me and I’ll get a bed set up” He said with authority and walked off.
I breathed a sigh of relief as the shift was finally over walking out of the main entrance. “Lacy…” I could hear someone from behind calling breathlessly; I turned to see Ezra jogging towards me.
I stood still until finally he was at my side and I began to walk again; “Have you arranged transport for the conference?” His question totally caught me off guard that I stopped right before the pedestrian curb.
“I generally go by train it’s cheaper…” I replied looking at him standing tall in the early morning light.
Day break was an orange red that made Ezra look sun kissed; I secretly stole glances at him while I drove. We’d barely uttered a word but his hand hadn’t left mine and that’s where I wanted his hand to stay forever and always in mine.
We stopped for breakfast at a service station so I could fill the car up.
I didn’t think we looked out of place a pair of loved up teenagers headed on an adventure of a lifetime, but when I saw the headlines flash on the news I realised the adventure would be cut short my Father had reported the Bentley stolen and it was making the BBC news.
“We’ve got to ditch the car!” I whispered to Ezra chewing greedily on my bacon I had picked off my burger. “We just filled the stupid thing up and it cost hundred pounds!” He sounded annoyed but he looked white when he saw the news with my Father saying his precious Bentley had been stolen, then came on the report I was missing and most likely had taken the car with a partner in crime. “Oh crap!” were Ezra’s words.
“Come on let’s scram before someone recognises it’s us…”
“Well I was going to drive and thought I’d offer you a lift!” He sounded casual as he said it; “Well I guess I could pay for half the petrol!” I replied with a shrug trying to make out it was no big deal.
But being in the car with him for a whole hour in less then twenty four hours time was a pretty big deal…
My cupboard was open wide and so was all the draws, my empty suitcase sat on the floor in front of me. I had my face buried in my hands at all the things I had to choose from, it was astounding how much I’d managed to accumulate but why did none of it feel right?
“Want a cup of tea?” I heard Angela’s voice say peering around my bedroom door. “Sure!” I replied with a sigh.
“Good because I’ve already brewed it!” She said pushing the door open and entering with two mugs. “So…”
